[00:00:01] Welcome to Wednesday One-Shots, the series where we share an extra story with you to help you get through the week. This time around we have a story by a listener named Lila.

[00:00:23] This happened when my then boyfriend and I lived in what was known as a quaint and safe area. We went out one evening as the sun was setting, with our phones in hand, enjoying a game that was popular at the time.

[00:00:37] Neither one of us could have guessed what was going to happen. So we walked around, catching monsters in our game, and we were having fun. We passed by a house, and two ladies called out to us from their porch.

[00:00:52] They asked if we were playing that game that all the kids were into, to strike up a conversation with us. I'm not social, and I'm not patient when there's a hiccup in my plans. So stopping for a conversation wasn't ideal for me.

[00:01:09] I wanted to use our time to keep playing the game before it got too dark. But my then boyfriend was the exact opposite. He was more than happy to stop and chat with them. After a few minutes of talking, they invited us to their house for drinks.

[00:01:26] As I was beginning to politely decline, and say that we should really get going, my boyfriend loudly talked over me and said, sure, that sounds great. Thanks so much. In the blink of an eye, our game was over and we were walking into this strange home.

[00:01:43] The couple told us that they had been together for a long time. They had a rabbit, and a very large, very nice, Pyrenees dog. I nervously stuck with the dog near the front door, who excessively extended her paw to me, begging for attention.

[00:02:00] One of the women told me that this was a trait of that breed called Pierpaw. She then offered me a drink and I declined. My boyfriend continued chatting with the couple while I held my phone, ready to call someone. Anyone. Maybe even the cops, who knows.

[00:02:17] Meanwhile, they talked about the dog and asked if we wanted to see the setup that they had made for her. In their basement. I said I was not interested, but my boyfriend for some reason was excited about this offer and asked to be shown the way.

[00:02:34] So down the basement stairs we went. I really didn't want to go down there, but I also had no idea of what to do in this situation. Staying upstairs and being separated from my boyfriend did not seem like a good idea.

[00:02:52] I didn't want to piss anybody off, so I went along. The basement wasn't anything special, but the so-called amazing setup that they had for their dog was this wire fencing in a square that nearly reached all the way up to the ceiling.

[00:03:10] All that was inside of the enclosure was a bowl with water and an elevated camping bed. This was all so creepy. The whole situation was creepy. The women excitedly told us to go inside in order to see how roomy this space was.

[00:03:30] They even urged us to go sit on the camping bed. See how comfortable it is, they said. I was frozen. There was no way I was going to go inside some cage in some stranger's basement.

[00:03:45] The dog hadn't even joined us down there to see the supposed space meant for her that she loved so much. My boyfriend walked into the cage to check it out. He sat on the bed. He commented on how nice it was.

[00:04:03] The two women gestured for me to follow him, but I stood there silently shaking my head. I kept my phone out with 911 pre-dialed, ready to hit the little green circle to call. This was my only true lifeline.

[00:04:21] We made it out of that oddly friendly couple's house, but when I freaked out at my boyfriend for putting us in potential danger, he made me feel like I was a freak who needed to trust people more. We broke up not long after that.

[00:04:37] So to the two lovebirds who insisted on inviting us in for drinks, which escalated to showing us the cage in their basement. Let's not meet again. Thank you Lila for sharing that story.

[00:04:51] And if you have a story to share, make sure you send it to letsnotmeetstories at gmail.com and we'll take a look. We'll see you all next week for a new full episode of Let's Not Meet. Everyone stay safe.
