Elizabeth is Frightened | Eclipse - Dark Venture

On this week's episode of the Old Time Radiocast we present you with two stories from the classic radio program Dark Venture.

Check out all of our podcasts at CrypticCountyPodcasts.com where you'll find shows like Let's Not Meet: A True Horror Podcast and Odd Trails.

[00:00:22] Over the minds of mortal men come many shadows, shadows of greed and hate, jealousy and fear, shadows which fog the minds of men and women, which urge them on into their venture in the dark.

[00:00:40] The American Broadcasting Company presents Dark Venture, written by Larry Marcus, directed by William T. Johnson and featuring John Banks in Elizabeth is Frightened.

[00:01:13] And now your host for tonight's journey into darkness, John Newland.

[00:01:23] This is John Newland.

[00:01:26] Tonight we search through the dark city for Elizabeth.

[00:01:31] The night is unbroken by stars or moon.

[00:01:33] There are only the thin, pitiful street lamps, the flashing headlights of an occasional speeding car.

[00:01:42] The hour is two.

[00:01:44] The chimes in the gray cathedral boom hollily in the empty streets.

[00:01:49] The ambulance races down Main, its red warning light flashing on and off quickly, like the fevered...

[00:01:56] A newsboy stands on a street corner waiting for the last bus.

[00:01:59] A tall girl in a thin coat hides in the shadows of a cigar store, waiting for nothing at all.

[00:02:06] But we go on, for we must find Elizabeth.

[00:02:09] Down Artmore Drive.

[00:02:11] Now the darkness deepens.

[00:02:13] Now it is a quiet, dignified darkness, draping itself over these fine homes.

[00:02:18] Now here at last we have reached Elizabeth.

[00:02:23] This is Elizabeth, tossing and turning in her sleep,

[00:02:27] in the grip of some terrible dream that will not release her.

[00:02:30] With the faint moonlight filtering through the curtains,

[00:02:33] we watch her strange struggle.

[00:02:35] Her head twisting feverishly from side to side,

[00:02:37] her fingers clawing at some invisible enemy.

[00:02:40] And then suddenly the struggle becomes too much.

[00:02:42] It's only a dream.

[00:02:56] Everything all right.

[00:02:58] It's only a dream.

[00:03:01] You won't hurt me again.

[00:03:05] Go back to sleep.

[00:03:07] But I...

[00:03:08] I can't sleep.

[00:03:13] Remembering.

[00:03:15] It's always the same.

[00:03:18] I can't forget you, Philip.

[00:03:22] No matter how hard I try.

[00:03:33] No, you introduced me to the stranger in town, Philip Bailey.

[00:03:36] I suppose we were brought together because

[00:03:38] at 45 he was an eligible widower

[00:03:41] and at 28 I was well on my way to being an ineligible old maid.

[00:03:45] But from the very first I was fascinated by him.

[00:03:49] By his strange mind.

[00:03:51] Andy was so honest and kind and I admired him for that.

[00:03:54] I remember how he spoke of his first wife, Martha.

[00:03:58] You would have liked Martha, Elizabeth.

[00:04:00] She was so wonderfully alive.

[00:04:03] The winter she took sick of pneumonia and died,

[00:04:06] I simply couldn't believe it.

[00:04:08] For weeks afterward,

[00:04:09] every time the doorbell rang,

[00:04:11] I thought, this will be Martha.

[00:04:12] I've been dreaming this terrible thing.

[00:04:14] I've only to throw open the door

[00:04:15] and she'll be standing there, smiling.

[00:04:24] A month after we met,

[00:04:26] Philip asked me to marry him

[00:04:27] and I accepted at once.

[00:04:29] Everyone was happy for me.

[00:04:31] Everyone agreed it was a good match.

[00:04:33] Everyone.

[00:04:34] But my housekeeper, Flora.

[00:04:36] When she heard I was to be married,

[00:04:38] she let me know how she felt in no uncertain way.

[00:04:40] I've known you since your mama brought you home

[00:04:43] in a pink blanket.

[00:04:44] And I can speak plain, Elizabeth.

[00:04:46] I think you're making a mistake.

[00:04:48] How can you say that, Flora?

[00:04:49] You hardly know Philip.

[00:04:50] Yeah?

[00:04:51] Got a feeling, that's all.

[00:04:52] Oh, Flora, a feeling.

[00:04:55] Well, what do you know about him, Elizabeth?

[00:04:57] What do you really know?

[00:04:59] I know that when I'm with him,

[00:05:01] I'm very, very happy.

[00:05:03] He knows that when he's with you,

[00:05:05] he's within grabbing distance of a lot of money.

[00:05:09] Oh, Philip was right.

[00:05:11] Hmm?

[00:05:11] He warned me that's what people would say,

[00:05:13] that he was marrying me for my money.

[00:05:16] Well, I want to show you something, Flora.

[00:05:17] I have a copy of it right here in my desk.

[00:05:21] Here.

[00:05:22] I want you to read this.

[00:05:24] Hmm?

[00:05:24] Hmm.

[00:05:26] Waiver of rights.

[00:05:28] I, Philip Bailey,

[00:05:29] do hereby relinquish

[00:05:31] all rights and claims

[00:05:32] to all real and personal property

[00:05:34] of Elizabeth Bronson

[00:05:36] for the duration of her natural life.

[00:05:39] Hmm.

[00:05:39] How do you like that, Flora?

[00:05:41] Well,

[00:05:42] on paper,

[00:05:43] it looks all right.

[00:05:53] When we returned from our honeymoon,

[00:05:55] Philip took over the side room

[00:05:56] on the first floor for his study.

[00:05:58] He filled it with his books

[00:05:59] and sealed himself off

[00:06:00] from everyone for hours.

[00:06:02] Yet we still had time for dinners

[00:06:03] and the theater and house parties.

[00:06:06] One night in our home,

[00:06:07] Philip met Dr. Davis,

[00:06:08] who'd been our family physician

[00:06:09] for many years.

[00:06:11] And here was the first indication

[00:06:13] of what was to come.

[00:06:14] No, Doctor,

[00:06:14] I don't agree at all.

[00:06:15] I have found that the most exciting aspect

[00:06:17] of psychiatry

[00:06:18] is the brutal and terrifying manner

[00:06:20] in which one mind

[00:06:21] can dominate another.

[00:06:23] You mean hypnosis, Mr. Bailey?

[00:06:24] Hypnosis,

[00:06:24] I dislike that word.

[00:06:25] It smacks at the vaudeville stage.

[00:06:27] But to me,

[00:06:28] it's utterly fascinating

[00:06:29] how I can look into another man's eyes

[00:06:30] and thrust my will

[00:06:32] into his very soul

[00:06:33] and force him to do my bidding.

[00:06:34] Of course,

[00:06:35] but only a quack

[00:06:35] would use hypnosis that way.

[00:06:37] A quack?

[00:06:37] That's right, Bailey.

[00:06:39] My heavens,

[00:06:39] it sounds like you two

[00:06:40] are about ready

[00:06:41] to start punching each other

[00:06:42] in the nose.

[00:06:42] I think I'll be going, Elizabeth.

[00:06:43] What, Doctor,

[00:06:44] you were to stay for dinner.

[00:06:45] I'll let the doctor go, Elizabeth.

[00:06:47] I don't think he'd enjoy

[00:06:48] his dinner anyhow.

[00:06:52] But everything really began

[00:06:53] two days later

[00:06:54] in the early evening

[00:06:56] with the ringing of the telephone.

[00:06:58] I'll get it, Lou.

[00:07:02] Hello?

[00:07:03] Oh, hello, Helen.

[00:07:06] The bridge game tonight?

[00:07:09] Well, I'd like to, Helen,

[00:07:10] but Elizabeth hasn't been

[00:07:12] feeling too well lately.

[00:07:13] I feel it.

[00:07:13] I guess it's just nerves,

[00:07:15] but she does need rest, you know.

[00:07:17] Could you excuse her

[00:07:18] just for tonight?

[00:07:20] Thanks, Helen.

[00:07:21] Thank you.

[00:07:21] Goodbye.

[00:07:24] Philip, why in the world

[00:07:25] did you tell her

[00:07:26] I wasn't feeling well?

[00:07:27] I feel wonderful.

[00:07:29] Well, I guess I'm just selfish.

[00:07:32] I don't want you to do any,

[00:07:33] go to any bridge game

[00:07:35] tonight, darling.

[00:07:36] I want you to stay home

[00:07:37] with me.

[00:07:40] I see.

[00:07:42] Why else would I tell her

[00:07:43] that, darling?

[00:07:51] Will that be all,

[00:07:52] Mrs. Bailey?

[00:07:53] Let me see.

[00:07:54] Where's the blades,

[00:07:54] two-faced hand cream?

[00:07:56] Yes, I guess that's all,

[00:07:57] Mr. Martin.

[00:07:58] Okay.

[00:07:59] Oh, by the way,

[00:08:00] are those sleeping pills

[00:08:01] helping you, Annie?

[00:08:03] Sleeping pills?

[00:08:05] Those pills your husband

[00:08:06] picked up for your nerves.

[00:08:07] My nerves?

[00:08:09] Yes.

[00:08:10] But I don't understand.

[00:08:12] Hmm?

[00:08:14] Never mind.

[00:08:15] Are you feeling better

[00:08:16] these days?

[00:08:18] Yes.

[00:08:19] Yes, I'm feeling

[00:08:20] much better.

[00:08:22] Of course I told the druggists

[00:08:30] they were for you, darling.

[00:08:32] I thought they'd be easier

[00:08:32] to get that way.

[00:08:34] Oh, then you really

[00:08:34] bought them for yourself.

[00:08:35] Yes, yes.

[00:08:36] I guess I've been doing

[00:08:37] too much reading lately.

[00:08:39] Just haven't been able

[00:08:40] to sleep so well.

[00:08:41] Philip,

[00:08:42] what did you mean

[00:08:43] easier to get?

[00:08:44] It's only a mild sedative,

[00:08:46] anyone can buy that medicine.

[00:08:47] Oh, I just didn't want

[00:08:48] a lot of people

[00:08:49] gossiping about me.

[00:08:51] Why make such a big issue

[00:08:52] out of it, Elizabeth?

[00:08:54] Why else would I have

[00:08:55] told the druggist that?

[00:09:02] Is that you, Flora?

[00:09:04] Yes, it's me, all right.

[00:09:05] It's me.

[00:09:06] Did you get all the groceries

[00:09:07] for dinner tonight?

[00:09:08] Yes, I got everything.

[00:09:09] Oh, I want everything

[00:09:10] to be just right.

[00:09:11] It's quite a celebration,

[00:09:12] you know.

[00:09:13] Just six months ago today

[00:09:14] I met Philip.

[00:09:15] Hmm.

[00:09:17] What's the matter, Flora?

[00:09:19] You feel all right,

[00:09:21] don't you?

[00:09:22] Why, of course,

[00:09:23] I feel fine.

[00:09:25] Oh, more people

[00:09:26] stopped me on the street

[00:09:27] to tell me how sorry

[00:09:28] they are you're feeling

[00:09:29] so bad

[00:09:29] and they hope

[00:09:30] you'll be better soon.

[00:09:32] Well, I don't understand

[00:09:32] that.

[00:09:33] I don't understand it at all.

[00:09:34] I'll get the phone.

[00:09:37] Hello?

[00:09:38] Hi, lady.

[00:09:40] Yes?

[00:09:42] Oh, yes, Mr. Rossi.

[00:09:44] Are the cakes

[00:09:44] for the night ready yet?

[00:09:49] I beg your pardon.

[00:09:50] I beg your pardon.

[00:10:01] What you said, Mr. Rossi.

[00:10:03] Why did you call?

[00:10:05] Well, I...

[00:10:18] I want to talk to my husband

[00:10:19] about this.

[00:10:20] He's in his study.

[00:10:21] For the party tonight.

[00:10:25] Why is Philip saying such things?

[00:10:27] Why is he?

[00:10:29] Yes, what is it?

[00:10:29] I must see you right away, Philip.

[00:10:31] I'm coming in.

[00:10:32] Elizabeth, I've asked you

[00:10:32] many times not to come

[00:10:33] into my study.

[00:10:34] But I want to ask...

[00:10:35] Am I being too presumptuous

[00:10:37] and wanting a place

[00:10:37] where I can read

[00:10:38] and think in privacy?

[00:10:39] Philip, I didn't mean

[00:10:40] to disturb you,

[00:10:40] but Mr. Rossi...

[00:10:41] Who?

[00:10:42] The baker who was supposed

[00:10:43] to have prepared

[00:10:44] our cakes for the night.

[00:10:45] He called saying

[00:10:46] you canceled the order

[00:10:47] because I wasn't well.

[00:10:49] Oh, yes.

[00:10:50] Yes.

[00:10:51] I told him not to bother you.

[00:10:54] I'm tired of all these parties.

[00:10:55] I want time to read

[00:10:56] and be alone, Elizabeth.

[00:10:58] I couldn't tell him

[00:10:59] that was the reason

[00:10:59] for the cancellation,

[00:11:01] so...

[00:11:01] Well, I said you were ill.

[00:11:02] I meant to explain.

[00:11:03] It slipped my mind.

[00:11:05] Is that so terrible?

[00:11:07] No.

[00:11:09] No, I suppose not.

[00:11:12] Why else would I have told

[00:11:13] the baker that, Elizabeth?

[00:11:18] No, Anne, I'm not really sick.

[00:11:20] Who told you I was?

[00:11:22] Mr. Rossi,

[00:11:23] well, I'm perfectly all right.

[00:11:25] Just a little tired, maybe.

[00:11:29] But, Francis,

[00:11:30] I'm all right.

[00:11:31] Really, I am.

[00:11:32] I know.

[00:11:33] I know what, Anne.

[00:11:34] I said,

[00:11:35] but it's just my nerves,

[00:11:36] that's all.

[00:11:39] No, Francis is wrong.

[00:11:40] I'm not ill.

[00:11:41] I'm just tired.

[00:11:42] That's all, Grace.

[00:11:43] Well, I may not sound too well,

[00:11:45] but I assure you,

[00:11:46] I assure you,

[00:11:46] I am all right.

[00:11:48] Yes, I'll take it easy.

[00:11:49] Yes, I promise.

[00:11:50] I promise.

[00:11:51] What's your husband of yours

[00:11:59] trying to do, Elizabeth?

[00:12:01] Why?

[00:12:02] What do you mean, Flora?

[00:12:03] You know what he told me

[00:12:04] this morning?

[00:12:05] What?

[00:12:06] He told me to throw

[00:12:07] your sleeping pills

[00:12:08] in the furnace.

[00:12:09] But they never were mine.

[00:12:12] He bought them for himself.

[00:12:14] I've just been taking them

[00:12:15] for the last few nights

[00:12:16] because all this talk

[00:12:17] about my health

[00:12:17] has made me so upset.

[00:12:19] I know that.

[00:12:20] But do you know why

[00:12:21] he wanted me

[00:12:22] to throw away the pills?

[00:12:25] Why?

[00:12:27] Because, according to him,

[00:12:28] he was afraid

[00:12:29] you were thinking

[00:12:30] of committing suicide.

[00:12:32] All right, Flora,

[00:12:32] that'll be enough from you.

[00:12:33] You can pack up your clothes,

[00:12:34] Flora.

[00:12:35] Get out of this house.

[00:12:35] You'd like that,

[00:12:36] wouldn't you?

[00:12:37] Well, I'm not getting

[00:12:37] out of this house,

[00:12:38] mighty, mighty.

[00:12:40] Well, you'll do as I say.

[00:12:41] Flora, go into the kitchen, please.

[00:12:43] I want to talk to Mr. Bailey.

[00:12:45] She's leaving this house.

[00:12:46] I'll knock at him,

[00:12:46] please.

[00:12:47] Flora, please do as I say.

[00:12:49] Go into the kitchen.

[00:12:50] The day when he came

[00:12:51] to this house,

[00:12:51] that's all I can say.

[00:12:53] She'll have to leave, darling.

[00:12:54] I won't allow her

[00:12:54] to upset you.

[00:12:55] She's not upsetting me, Philip.

[00:12:56] I'm perfectly all right.

[00:12:58] Well, of course you are,

[00:12:59] but you should rest more.

[00:13:01] You shouldn't allow yourself

[00:13:02] to become so excited.

[00:13:03] So much has happened

[00:13:04] that I can't understand.

[00:13:06] Why, everyone in town

[00:13:06] seems to think

[00:13:07] that I'm practically,

[00:13:09] practically on the verge

[00:13:10] of suicide.

[00:13:11] Elizabeth, what are you saying?

[00:13:13] You mustn't even think.

[00:13:14] It's true.

[00:13:15] It's that woman

[00:13:16] who upset you with her lies.

[00:13:17] She's got to leave

[00:13:17] this house, Elizabeth.

[00:13:19] Flora lived in this house

[00:13:20] even before I did, Philip.

[00:13:22] I can't tell her to leave.

[00:13:24] And my wishes mean nothing?

[00:13:26] Oh, it's not that.

[00:13:27] I know the mind

[00:13:28] and how it works.

[00:13:29] I know it far better

[00:13:30] than your doctors.

[00:13:31] I know you're in peril,

[00:13:32] but you need rest

[00:13:33] and quiet.

[00:13:34] And I won't allow

[00:13:35] this fish wipe

[00:13:35] to fill your brain

[00:13:36] with poison.

[00:13:37] You must make her go,

[00:13:37] Elizabeth.

[00:13:38] Elizabeth.

[00:13:38] No.

[00:13:40] I see.

[00:13:42] You imagine that

[00:13:43] she is your wall

[00:13:45] against all evil.

[00:13:46] Is that it, Elizabeth?

[00:13:48] Perhaps she is, Philip.

[00:13:50] Well,

[00:13:51] I think you need a lesson.

[00:13:58] I spent the rest

[00:13:59] of the day in my room.

[00:14:02] I was so confused

[00:14:04] I didn't know

[00:14:04] where to turn.

[00:14:06] What had happened to me,

[00:14:07] to Philip,

[00:14:08] to our marriage,

[00:14:09] what was going on?

[00:14:11] Come in.

[00:14:14] Oh, Flora.

[00:14:16] I meant to come down

[00:14:17] and see you.

[00:14:18] I'm sorry about

[00:14:19] what happened this afternoon.

[00:14:21] Philip didn't mean

[00:14:22] half of what he said.

[00:14:26] Flora, what's wrong?

[00:14:30] You look so strange.

[00:14:33] Flora, answer me.

[00:14:34] What's wrong?

[00:14:36] Flora, talk to me.

[00:14:38] Flora, what are you

[00:14:39] going to do?

[00:14:43] Slapped me.

[00:14:44] Have you gone crazy?

[00:14:47] Flora, come back here.

[00:14:49] Flora, why did you

[00:14:50] do this to me?

[00:14:51] Speak to me.

[00:14:52] Why did you do this

[00:14:52] to me?

[00:15:01] I was stunned.

[00:15:04] I couldn't believe

[00:15:05] what had happened,

[00:15:05] but I could still feel

[00:15:07] the sting of her hand.

[00:15:09] Why had she done

[00:15:10] this to me?

[00:15:12] After a while,

[00:15:13] I found enough courage

[00:15:14] to go looking for her.

[00:15:15] She was in the kitchen

[00:15:16] preparing supper

[00:15:16] as though nothing

[00:15:17] had happened.

[00:15:18] She looked up

[00:15:19] when I entered.

[00:15:20] Hello, Elizabeth.

[00:15:21] You look tired, dear.

[00:15:23] Flora, why did you do it?

[00:15:25] You mean,

[00:15:25] tell that husband

[00:15:26] of yours

[00:15:26] what I thought of him?

[00:15:27] I just...

[00:15:28] That's not what I mean.

[00:15:30] Why did you come

[00:15:31] to my room and...

[00:15:32] Come to your room?

[00:15:34] What are you...

[00:15:34] What are you talking about?

[00:15:36] I've been down

[00:15:36] in this kitchen

[00:15:37] all afternoon

[00:15:38] preparing supper.

[00:15:39] You're lying, Flora.

[00:15:41] Now, why should I lie?

[00:15:44] Honey,

[00:15:44] what's wrong with you?

[00:15:46] The only time

[00:15:47] I left this kitchen

[00:15:48] was when Mr. Bailey

[00:15:49] called me into the library

[00:15:50] to apologize

[00:15:51] for the way he talked.

[00:15:52] I took his apology

[00:15:54] with a grain of salt.

[00:15:55] I can tell you...

[00:15:56] Then...

[00:15:56] You weren't in

[00:15:58] to see me this afternoon?

[00:15:59] No.

[00:16:02] Flora, telephone Dr. Davis.

[00:16:03] Tell him I must see him

[00:16:04] right away.

[00:16:05] Then I want you

[00:16:05] to go over

[00:16:06] to your sister's house.

[00:16:07] Stay there

[00:16:07] till I call you.

[00:16:08] When she came

[00:16:17] into your room,

[00:16:18] how did she look, Elizabeth?

[00:16:19] Well, I didn't realize

[00:16:20] it at the time,

[00:16:21] Dr. Davis,

[00:16:22] but she walked

[00:16:23] as though

[00:16:24] in her sleep.

[00:16:26] And she told you

[00:16:27] that she was

[00:16:27] with your husband

[00:16:28] before this happened?

[00:16:29] Yes.

[00:16:30] Well,

[00:16:31] then under the circumstances

[00:16:32] I'd say Flora

[00:16:33] was walking

[00:16:34] in her sleep,

[00:16:35] a hypnotic sleep.

[00:16:37] Hypnotic sleep?

[00:16:38] I never mentioned

[00:16:39] this to you, Elizabeth,

[00:16:40] but when I first

[00:16:40] met your husband,

[00:16:41] I discovered

[00:16:42] he was a firm believer

[00:16:43] in hypnosis.

[00:16:44] But...

[00:16:46] But...

[00:16:47] What has Philip

[00:16:48] to gain

[00:16:48] by doing that

[00:16:50] to Flora?

[00:16:50] Oh, I imagine

[00:16:51] you goaded him

[00:16:52] into his little display

[00:16:53] of hypnotic power.

[00:16:55] The real question is

[00:16:56] what would he gain

[00:16:57] by doing

[00:16:57] that same thing

[00:16:58] to you?

[00:16:59] Nothing at all.

[00:17:01] He couldn't touch

[00:17:02] my money,

[00:17:03] if that's what you mean.

[00:17:05] He'd just about

[00:17:06] have to talk me

[00:17:07] into killing myself.

[00:17:11] Doctor.

[00:17:11] Yes?

[00:17:13] This morning

[00:17:13] he told Flora

[00:17:14] he was afraid

[00:17:15] I was going

[00:17:15] to commit suicide.

[00:17:16] He started talking

[00:17:17] in town

[00:17:18] that I'm moody

[00:17:18] and nervous

[00:17:19] and he...

[00:17:22] Yes, nurse,

[00:17:23] what is it?

[00:17:23] Mr. Bailey

[00:17:24] is in the waiting room.

[00:17:25] Oh, no, doctor.

[00:17:26] What does he want?

[00:17:27] Oh, he just wants

[00:17:28] to know

[00:17:29] when Mrs. Bailey

[00:17:29] will be ready

[00:17:30] to go home.

[00:17:31] He stopped by

[00:17:31] to pick her up.

[00:17:32] Doctor.

[00:17:33] Send Mr. Bailey in.

[00:17:34] Yes, sir.

[00:17:35] I don't want to see him.

[00:17:36] I never want

[00:17:36] to see him again.

[00:17:38] Elizabeth,

[00:17:38] what's happened, darling?

[00:17:39] Your wife felt ill

[00:17:40] so she came to see me,

[00:17:41] Mr. Bailey.

[00:17:41] What in the world

[00:17:42] is wrong with you?

[00:17:42] Let's not waste time.

[00:17:43] There's a train

[00:17:44] leaving here

[00:17:44] for the east

[00:17:45] at six o'clock.

[00:17:46] That's just

[00:17:46] thirty minutes from now.

[00:17:47] You'd better buy

[00:17:48] a ticket for that train.

[00:17:49] Elizabeth,

[00:17:49] what's he talking about?

[00:17:50] I don't understand.

[00:17:51] I'll help you to understand.

[00:17:52] Your wife is afraid

[00:17:53] that you're trying

[00:17:53] to make her commit suicide.

[00:17:55] But if everything else fails,

[00:18:00] I'll talk to you

[00:18:00] this afternoon.

[00:18:01] Maybe I don't have

[00:18:02] enough evidence

[00:18:02] to accuse you

[00:18:03] of trying to kill her.

[00:18:04] But if you're not

[00:18:05] on that six o'clock train,

[00:18:06] I'll talk to the

[00:18:06] district attorney.

[00:18:09] Do you believe this,

[00:18:10] Elizabeth?

[00:18:12] Yes.

[00:18:13] Do you want me to leave?

[00:18:16] Yes.

[00:18:18] All right.

[00:18:20] I'll go.

[00:18:21] I'll wire you later.

[00:18:22] You can send

[00:18:22] my things down to me.

[00:18:24] Goodbye, Elizabeth.

[00:18:34] Later,

[00:18:34] I drove with Dr. Davis

[00:18:36] to the railway station.

[00:18:37] And from the parked car,

[00:18:39] I watched Philip emerge

[00:18:40] from the station

[00:18:40] carrying a suitcase

[00:18:41] and board the waiting train.

[00:18:44] I waited until the train

[00:18:45] was gone,

[00:18:46] and then I telephoned Flora.

[00:18:48] Well, Flora,

[00:18:48] he's gone.

[00:18:49] He's gone for good.

[00:18:50] Good.

[00:18:53] No, Flora.

[00:18:55] Hmm?

[00:18:55] No, you stay

[00:18:56] with your sister tonight.

[00:18:58] I'd rather be alone

[00:18:59] just for the night.

[00:19:00] You too?

[00:19:07] Yes, Flora.

[00:19:08] I'll call you.

[00:19:15] Afterwards,

[00:19:15] I had a good dinner.

[00:19:17] Went to a picture show.

[00:19:19] It was during the show

[00:19:20] that I started getting

[00:19:21] the strangest feeling.

[00:19:24] Almost a premonition.

[00:19:26] I couldn't understand it.

[00:19:28] I thought perhaps

[00:19:28] it was just the darkness

[00:19:29] of the theater

[00:19:30] and the natural reaction

[00:19:31] of everything

[00:19:31] that had happened today.

[00:19:33] I left the theater

[00:19:34] and wandered around

[00:19:35] the streets

[00:19:35] trying to find a reason

[00:19:36] for not going home.

[00:19:38] What was wrong with me?

[00:19:39] What was I afraid of?

[00:19:41] And then,

[00:19:41] for no reason

[00:19:42] that I can explain,

[00:19:42] I called the railroad station.

[00:19:48] I'd like to inquire

[00:19:49] about the 6 p.m. train, please.

[00:19:51] You mean for tomorrow night?

[00:19:52] No, no.

[00:19:53] The one that left tonight.

[00:19:54] Yes, what about it?

[00:19:55] Well, there hasn't been

[00:19:56] any trouble with it,

[00:19:57] has there?

[00:19:59] Trouble?

[00:20:00] I mean,

[00:20:00] it wasn't delayed

[00:20:01] anyplace along the line

[00:20:02] or anything like that.

[00:20:03] Oh, no.

[00:20:08] Thank you.

[00:20:09] Thank you very much.

[00:20:12] Now, that was

[00:20:13] a silly thing to do.

[00:20:15] And then I did

[00:20:16] something even more silly.

[00:20:20] I dialed my own number.

[00:20:23] What was wrong with me?

[00:20:26] Who did I expect

[00:20:27] to answer the phone

[00:20:27] in that empty house?

[00:20:31] After a while,

[00:20:32] I hung up.

[00:20:35] Then I went outside

[00:20:36] and took a cab home.

[00:20:44] I just couldn't sleep.

[00:20:46] I sat up in bed

[00:20:47] and turned on the lamp.

[00:20:48] The clock said 1.35.

[00:20:50] Perhaps a glass of warm milk

[00:20:52] would help me relax.

[00:20:53] I started for the kitchen

[00:20:54] to prepare it.

[00:20:56] When I passed Philip's study,

[00:20:58] I saw the door

[00:20:59] was half open.

[00:20:59] Oh, it gave me a start.

[00:21:01] I heard over

[00:21:02] and turned on the light.

[00:21:04] Study was empty,

[00:21:05] of course.

[00:21:07] But all his books

[00:21:08] were still there.

[00:21:10] Then I went to the kitchen.

[00:21:11] I prepared the warm milk

[00:21:12] and I took it back

[00:21:13] to my room with me.

[00:21:14] But the milk

[00:21:15] didn't help at all.

[00:21:15] I couldn't sleep.

[00:21:17] I thought of calling Flora,

[00:21:18] but I couldn't disturb her

[00:21:20] at this time of night.

[00:21:22] And then

[00:21:24] a tiny feeling

[00:21:26] started growing in me.

[00:21:28] As faint as the ticking

[00:21:30] of a watch,

[00:21:33] I wanted to go back

[00:21:35] to Philip's study.

[00:21:37] The feeling grew

[00:21:38] annoying at me.

[00:21:39] I wanted to go back

[00:21:40] to Philip's study.

[00:21:42] Finally,

[00:21:42] I couldn't stand it

[00:21:43] any longer.

[00:21:44] I got up from my bed

[00:21:44] and put on my robe

[00:21:45] and started down the hall.

[00:21:48] I opened his door again

[00:21:49] and snapped on the light.

[00:21:51] I told myself

[00:21:52] the reason I had come here

[00:21:53] was to decide

[00:21:54] what I'd do with this room.

[00:21:56] I'd destroy every evidence

[00:21:58] he'd ever lived here.

[00:21:59] I'd throw out the bookcases

[00:22:00] and paper the walls

[00:22:01] and change the curtains.

[00:22:03] I went over

[00:22:04] to his desk.

[00:22:04] In the top drawer

[00:22:05] I found a packet of papers.

[00:22:08] Letters from Martha's

[00:22:09] first wife.

[00:22:10] Their marriage license.

[00:22:12] Here was her death certificate.

[00:22:15] Martha Ellen Bailey

[00:22:17] died August 23rd, 1944.

[00:22:21] Age 25.

[00:22:23] Cause of death,

[00:22:27] suicide.

[00:22:30] But he told me

[00:22:31] she died of pneumonia.

[00:22:33] No.

[00:22:34] Martha killed herself,

[00:22:35] Elizabeth.

[00:22:36] Elizabeth.

[00:22:37] Yes,

[00:22:37] she killed herself,

[00:22:39] poor dear.

[00:22:40] And she was so young.

[00:22:45] I saw you

[00:22:46] get on that train.

[00:22:48] The train

[00:22:48] makes so many stops,

[00:22:50] Elizabeth.

[00:22:51] What are you going to do?

[00:22:53] Nothing.

[00:22:54] Not a thing.

[00:22:56] But I rather imagine

[00:22:57] your Dr. Davis

[00:22:58] will be sorry

[00:22:59] when he finds out

[00:22:59] that in spite of my going,

[00:23:01] you killed yourself.

[00:23:02] No, Philip.

[00:23:04] But then again,

[00:23:05] perhaps he'll think

[00:23:05] you killed yourself

[00:23:06] because of my going.

[00:23:09] Out of love,

[00:23:10] my darling.

[00:23:12] Why are you doing this?

[00:23:14] There are many reasons.

[00:23:16] The one that you would

[00:23:17] understand concerns

[00:23:18] your money, of course.

[00:23:20] And the fact that it

[00:23:20] becomes all mine

[00:23:22] upon your death.

[00:23:23] I'm getting out of here.

[00:23:24] No.

[00:23:25] Elizabeth, wait.

[00:23:26] You're hurting me.

[00:23:26] You'll not run away.

[00:23:29] Let me go, please.

[00:23:30] You'll not run away.

[00:23:32] Please, Philip, please.

[00:23:33] Look at me, Elizabeth.

[00:23:34] No.

[00:23:34] Look at me.

[00:23:35] No.

[00:23:36] You'll not run away.

[00:23:39] Philip, Philip, don't.

[00:23:40] You'll not run away, Elizabeth.

[00:23:44] You'll stay here

[00:23:46] because you want to stay.

[00:23:49] You want to stay, Elizabeth.

[00:23:53] Don't.

[00:23:53] You don't want to run away.

[00:23:56] You want to stay with me.

[00:23:59] No, I...

[00:23:59] You want to stay with me, Elizabeth.

[00:24:04] You want to stay with me.

[00:24:10] You see?

[00:24:12] I'll let you go.

[00:24:15] You could run away

[00:24:16] if you wanted to,

[00:24:17] but you no longer desire

[00:24:19] to run away.

[00:24:21] You want to stay with me.

[00:24:26] I...

[00:24:27] You want to stay with me.

[00:24:33] Isn't that right, Elizabeth?

[00:24:36] Yes.

[00:24:37] I want to stay with you.

[00:24:40] Yes.

[00:24:41] Of course you do.

[00:24:44] You love me very much.

[00:24:46] You believe in me.

[00:24:49] Isn't that right, Elizabeth?

[00:24:51] I believe in you, Philip.

[00:24:57] Elizabeth,

[00:24:59] this afternoon you told me to go away,

[00:25:01] that you no longer love me.

[00:25:04] Now,

[00:25:06] kiss me, Elizabeth.

[00:25:12] You see,

[00:25:13] there are no magic words,

[00:25:15] no secret formula,

[00:25:17] merely my mind

[00:25:19] imposing its will upon yours.

[00:25:23] Elizabeth.

[00:25:26] in the bottom drawer of my desk,

[00:25:28] you'll find a gun.

[00:25:31] Get that gun.

[00:25:41] Now come back here to me

[00:25:43] and give me that gun.

[00:25:51] You do these things

[00:25:52] because my mind is stronger

[00:25:55] than yours, Elizabeth.

[00:25:56] Elizabeth.

[00:25:57] You would stand here

[00:25:59] and you would let me kill you

[00:26:00] if I wanted to.

[00:26:03] Wouldn't you, Elizabeth?

[00:26:05] I would stand here

[00:26:07] and let you kill me.

[00:26:09] I do not want to kill you.

[00:26:11] You take the gun, Elizabeth.

[00:26:13] That's right.

[00:26:14] You take the gun.

[00:26:16] They'll find your finger

[00:26:17] stiffened around the trigger

[00:26:18] and I'll return to the town I left

[00:26:21] and in the morning

[00:26:22] someone will call me

[00:26:23] and tell me

[00:26:24] you killed yourself

[00:26:26] because I left you

[00:26:28] and I will be very unhappy.

[00:26:32] Take the gun.

[00:26:34] And turn the barrel

[00:26:36] to your heart, Elizabeth.

[00:26:38] The gun.

[00:26:40] Turn it to your heart.

[00:26:42] Not to me.

[00:26:43] Elizabeth!

[00:26:44] Shut the gun!

[00:26:47] Elizabeth.

[00:26:55] Someone heard the shots

[00:26:57] and found me standing

[00:26:58] over Philip's body.

[00:27:00] I explained that Philip

[00:27:02] had hypnotized me

[00:27:03] and there was no trouble at all,

[00:27:05] not even a trial

[00:27:06] because no one is responsible

[00:27:08] for their actions

[00:27:09] in a hypnotic state

[00:27:10] and since then

[00:27:12] everyone has been so nice to me

[00:27:13] Dr. Davis, Flora,

[00:27:15] my friends.

[00:27:16] Everyone's been so helpful

[00:27:17] and understanding

[00:27:18] and I'm very grateful.

[00:27:22] But still

[00:27:24] I find it so hard to sleep

[00:27:27] because always I wonder

[00:27:31] does everybody truly believe

[00:27:35] that when I killed Philip

[00:27:37] I was actually hypnotized?

[00:27:51] Yes, Elizabeth has trouble sleeping

[00:27:53] and when she finally falls asleep

[00:27:56] her dreams are far worse

[00:27:57] than any insomnia

[00:27:59] because no matter

[00:28:00] how many times

[00:28:01] she tells herself

[00:28:02] that Philip deserved to die

[00:28:03] she still remains

[00:28:05] a victim of her own guilt.

[00:28:07] Maybe we found our moral

[00:28:08] that deep within each of us

[00:28:11] is a pathetic longing

[00:28:12] to do only good

[00:28:13] in this fleeting life

[00:28:15] and that no matter

[00:28:16] how we may ridicule

[00:28:17] this longing,

[00:28:17] no matter how we may

[00:28:18] rebel against it

[00:28:19] no matter how it annoys us

[00:28:21] in this sophisticated world

[00:28:22] the goodness remains

[00:28:24] to torture us

[00:28:25] when we do evil

[00:28:26] and to always remind us

[00:28:28] that we are more

[00:28:29] than we seem to be

[00:28:30] that perhaps

[00:28:32] we might even be

[00:28:33] the children of God

[00:28:35] and if that thought

[00:28:36] embarrasses you

[00:28:38] well, I rather imagine

[00:28:39] there are times

[00:28:40] when it also

[00:28:41] embarrasses him.

[00:28:43] Good night, folks.

[00:28:45] See you next week.

[00:28:59] Listen next week

[00:29:01] for another Dark Venture

[00:29:02] with John Newland.

[00:29:04] Featured in tonight's story

[00:29:05] was John Banks

[00:29:06] as Elizabeth

[00:29:07] and Hans Conrad

[00:29:08] as Philip.

[00:29:09] The others in the cast

[00:29:10] were Janet Scott,

[00:29:11] Bonnie Phillips,

[00:29:12] Jack Petruzzi.

[00:29:18] Dark Venture

[00:29:34] Over the minds

[00:29:35] of mortal men

[00:29:36] come many shadows

[00:29:38] Shadows of greed

[00:29:39] and hate

[00:29:40] Jealousy

[00:29:42] and fear

[00:29:43] Darkness

[00:29:44] is the absence

[00:29:45] of light

[00:29:47] So in the sudden shadows

[00:29:48] which fog the minds

[00:29:50] of men and women

[00:29:51] are to be found

[00:29:52] the strange impulses

[00:29:54] which urge them on

[00:29:56] to their venture

[00:29:57] in the dark

[00:30:04] Now for tonight's

[00:30:13] venture in the dark

[00:30:14] we bring you

[00:30:16] Mr. Charles Barrett

[00:30:17] in Eclipse

[00:30:28] Tell me, Mr. Police Commissioner

[00:30:29] how long ago

[00:30:30] did life begin

[00:30:31] for you?

[00:30:32] 40, 45 years ago?

[00:30:34] Well, life for me

[00:30:35] began about 24 hours ago

[00:30:38] Yeah, 24 hours ago

[00:30:40] I woke up

[00:30:41] I was lying in a ditch

[00:30:42] beside a railroad track

[00:30:44] When I first opened my eyes

[00:30:46] I saw the sky

[00:30:47] It was clear

[00:30:48] and very blue

[00:30:50] I sat up

[00:30:51] and saw that my knee

[00:30:52] was sticking out

[00:30:52] through a hole in my pants

[00:30:53] that all my clothes

[00:30:54] were dirty and torn

[00:30:55] and started thinking

[00:30:56] Wait a minute

[00:30:57] What's happened to me?

[00:30:59] I rubbed my eyes

[00:31:00] like you do

[00:31:01] when you first wake up

[00:31:02] My hand ran across

[00:31:03] something sticky

[00:31:05] I looked at my hand

[00:31:08] Blood

[00:31:09] Yeah, dry, sticky blood

[00:31:12] I figured I must have

[00:31:13] fallen off a train

[00:31:14] or been thrown off

[00:31:16] I got up

[00:31:18] Then this bum

[00:31:18] started walking up to me

[00:31:21] I could see him

[00:31:21] quite a way off

[00:31:25] Yeah?

[00:31:27] No, I'm alright

[00:31:29] What's the matter?

[00:31:30] Nothing, I'm alright

[00:31:32] Dizzy, I guess

[00:31:32] You've been kinda banged around

[00:31:34] Yeah, I guess I have

[00:31:35] I better rest a bit

[00:31:37] Sure, Pete, sure

[00:31:38] That's the idea

[00:31:41] What happened?

[00:31:42] Get bumped off the rods?

[00:31:44] I don't know

[00:31:46] Well, how'd you be in the ditch

[00:31:48] if you wasn't bumped off the rods?

[00:31:49] I don't know

[00:31:50] Oh, I tell you

[00:31:50] Okay, Pete, okay

[00:31:52] My name isn't Pete

[00:31:53] Oh, well, I just call everybody there

[00:31:56] Um, what is your name?

[00:31:57] My name is

[00:31:59] Where?

[00:32:01] My name

[00:32:03] Well?

[00:32:06] I can't remember my name

[00:32:07] You can't remember?

[00:32:10] Are you kidding?

[00:32:11] What are you trying to pull?

[00:32:13] Don't even know your own name

[00:32:14] I tell you it's true

[00:32:15] I don't know

[00:32:15] I can't remember

[00:32:16] It's not so easy

[00:32:18] to forget your own name, Pete

[00:32:19] Look, don't ride me

[00:32:20] Something's happened to me

[00:32:21] I don't know just what

[00:32:22] but something's wrong

[00:32:23] Well, where you from?

[00:32:26] What?

[00:32:27] Where you from?

[00:32:29] I don't know that either

[00:32:31] Well, uh

[00:32:31] What are you trying to get away with, Joe?

[00:32:33] You can let me in

[00:32:34] I won't spill

[00:32:35] I'm not trying to get away with anything

[00:32:36] I just can't think

[00:32:37] I just can't remember

[00:32:39] It's crazy

[00:32:40] Hey, you really got it bad, ain't you, Joe?

[00:32:43] Well, let me see

[00:32:44] I was...

[00:32:46] No, it's no use

[00:32:48] Hey, look in your pockets

[00:32:50] Maybe you'll find something

[00:32:51] with your name on it

[00:32:52] Yeah, maybe

[00:32:52] I never thought of that

[00:32:54] At least it's a chance

[00:32:55] Yeah

[00:32:57] But, uh

[00:32:58] What's wrong now?

[00:33:00] There's nothing in my pockets

[00:33:01] They're empty

[00:33:02] You're in bad shape

[00:33:03] You don't know who you are

[00:33:05] where you're from

[00:33:06] and you ain't got nothing

[00:33:06] in your pockets

[00:33:08] Uh, where you heading?

[00:33:10] I can't remember

[00:33:12] Well, if I was you

[00:33:13] the first thing I'd do

[00:33:14] is try to find out who I am

[00:33:16] That's...

[00:33:17] that's kind of important

[00:33:18] Yeah

[00:33:18] Well, I seen the train pass through

[00:33:20] the train you fell off of

[00:33:22] and I don't know

[00:33:23] where it was headed for

[00:33:24] but I do know

[00:33:25] where it started out from

[00:33:26] Where?

[00:33:27] Chicago

[00:33:28] Chicago?

[00:33:29] Yeah

[00:33:29] Now, the thing for you to do

[00:33:30] is head right back to Chicago

[00:33:32] and start asking questions

[00:33:34] and, oh, maybe

[00:33:35] maybe you better pay

[00:33:35] a little visit to the hospital

[00:33:36] and have them look at your bean

[00:33:38] Now, Pete

[00:33:39] you don't look so good to me

[00:33:41] Mm-mm

[00:33:41] You don't look good at all

[00:33:56] Yes, Mr. Commissioner

[00:33:57] that's how it started

[00:33:57] with loss of memory

[00:33:59] amnesia

[00:34:00] That was bad enough

[00:34:02] but if I'd known

[00:34:02] how much bigger

[00:34:03] and more terrible

[00:34:04] my problems were going to be

[00:34:06] I never would have

[00:34:07] come back to Chicago

[00:34:09] Anyway, I hitchhiked in

[00:34:11] and I saw how people

[00:34:12] were looking at my torn clothes

[00:34:13] I thought I'd better pay

[00:34:14] a visit to a tailor

[00:34:17] Good afternoon

[00:34:18] Come in

[00:34:19] Thank you

[00:34:20] Such a beautiful day

[00:34:21] I don't feel like working already

[00:34:23] but when it's got to be

[00:34:24] it's got to be

[00:34:25] What can I do for you?

[00:34:26] Well, my clothes

[00:34:27] Such a mess

[00:34:28] You had an accident, eh?

[00:34:30] Yeah, I'm afraid I did

[00:34:30] What's the matter with me?

[00:34:32] Sit down, sit down

[00:34:33] You look terrible

[00:34:34] You could use a little drink

[00:34:35] some, Randy, maybe

[00:34:36] No, thanks

[00:34:37] I feel okay now

[00:34:39] I'd just like to have these clothes

[00:34:40] sewn up and pressed a little

[00:34:42] Could you do it while I wait?

[00:34:43] Certainly and with pleasure

[00:34:45] Look

[00:34:45] Go into the back room

[00:34:46] and throw your clothes through the door

[00:34:48] You'll find the wash basin

[00:34:49] you can wash that cut on your face

[00:34:51] That's very kind of you

[00:34:53] There's only one thing

[00:34:54] Yes?

[00:34:56] I'm flat broke

[00:34:57] I couldn't pay you for them now

[00:35:00] Maybe in a day or so

[00:35:01] All right

[00:35:02] A day or so

[00:35:03] A week or so

[00:35:04] Go and make yourself at home

[00:35:06] And while you're washing up

[00:35:07] I'll mend the pants

[00:35:08] I'll get him in first class shape

[00:35:11] So I went into the tailor's

[00:35:12] little back room

[00:35:13] and took off my suit

[00:35:15] Then I went over to the wash stand

[00:35:16] and started to wash

[00:35:17] It felt better

[00:35:25] as soon as I got a little

[00:35:25] cool water on it

[00:35:27] I sat down

[00:35:29] I tried to figure

[00:35:30] what would I do

[00:35:31] Where would I go from here?

[00:35:33] Then I noticed something

[00:35:34] about my pants belt

[00:35:35] It was bulky

[00:35:37] It had a little zipper

[00:35:38] in the back

[00:35:39] When I opened it

[00:35:40] money started falling out

[00:35:41] in tight rolls

[00:35:43] Bills were crisp and new

[00:35:45] I thought my heart

[00:35:45] was beating loud enough

[00:35:46] for the tailor to hear it

[00:35:47] as I counted the money

[00:35:49] There was $50,000

[00:35:50] Hey mister

[00:35:51] How are you coming

[00:35:52] with the clothes?

[00:35:53] Huh?

[00:35:54] Oh yeah

[00:35:54] They're ready

[00:35:55] I'll hand them to you

[00:35:56] through the door

[00:35:57] Good

[00:35:57] I'll have them fixed up

[00:35:59] like new in no time

[00:36:00] You sit there and relax

[00:36:01] You look like

[00:36:02] you could stand it

[00:36:03] Yeah relax

[00:36:05] Relax with $50,000

[00:36:07] strapped around my stomach

[00:36:09] Well little tailor

[00:36:10] fixed my clothes

[00:36:11] and I looked fairly

[00:36:11] respectable again

[00:36:12] You know

[00:36:13] I never seen

[00:36:13] such nice material

[00:36:14] in a long time

[00:36:15] with that suit

[00:36:16] That so?

[00:36:17] Yes

[00:36:17] It cost a beautiful dollar

[00:36:19] Believe me

[00:36:19] Where did you get it?

[00:36:20] Where the

[00:36:22] Wasn't there a label on it?

[00:36:24] No

[00:36:24] The label had been ripped off

[00:36:25] So why am I asking

[00:36:27] so many questions?

[00:36:29] Goodbye and good luck

[00:36:30] What do I owe you?

[00:36:31] So when you earn a few dollars

[00:36:33] come back

[00:36:33] and we'll figure it out

[00:36:34] Well let's do it

[00:36:36] About $20

[00:36:38] But before you said

[00:36:39] you were broke

[00:36:40] This I don't understand

[00:36:41] That makes two of us

[00:36:43] my friend

[00:36:52] You can imagine

[00:36:53] how I felt

[00:36:53] can't you Mr. Commissioner?

[00:36:54] I didn't know

[00:36:55] what to do

[00:36:55] where to turn

[00:36:56] I thought of going

[00:36:57] to the police

[00:36:58] but something in my

[00:36:59] subconscious mind

[00:36:59] warned me against it

[00:37:03] When I looked

[00:37:03] fairly respectable again

[00:37:04] I went out on the street

[00:37:05] and began walking

[00:37:07] I didn't know

[00:37:07] where I was going

[00:37:08] or why

[00:37:10] $50,000

[00:37:13] I tried

[00:37:13] with every ounce

[00:37:14] of strength

[00:37:15] to crash through

[00:37:15] the wall

[00:37:16] that separated me

[00:37:16] from my past

[00:37:18] Oh it was no use

[00:37:22] I must have walked

[00:37:22] for miles

[00:37:24] because suddenly

[00:37:25] it was dark

[00:37:26] I was on a dismal

[00:37:27] little side street

[00:37:28] lined with

[00:37:28] hock shops

[00:37:29] hamburger joints

[00:37:30] and honky tonks

[00:37:32] and then some

[00:37:33] punk kid

[00:37:33] brushed against me

[00:37:34] Hey mister

[00:37:35] What?

[00:37:36] You better fade fast

[00:37:37] What?

[00:37:38] You're being tailed

[00:37:39] What do you mean?

[00:37:41] A guy's been

[00:37:41] following you

[00:37:42] for the last hour

[00:37:43] Following me?

[00:37:44] Relax

[00:37:44] Don't get so jumpy

[00:37:46] Boy

[00:37:47] you must really be hot

[00:37:49] Now

[00:37:50] look into this window

[00:37:51] you can see

[00:37:52] his reflection

[00:37:53] the tall skinny guy

[00:37:54] in the white suit

[00:37:56] I see him

[00:37:58] How do you know

[00:37:58] he's been following me?

[00:38:00] Cause I've been

[00:38:00] walking a little

[00:38:01] behind you

[00:38:02] ever since you

[00:38:02] turned down

[00:38:03] 14th street

[00:38:03] and I can tell

[00:38:05] when a guy's

[00:38:05] being tailed

[00:38:06] Why are you

[00:38:07] telling me then?

[00:38:08] Cause maybe

[00:38:09] you'll be a big

[00:38:10] hearted guy

[00:38:10] and slip me

[00:38:11] a bill for it

[00:38:12] and cause maybe

[00:38:13] I don't like cops

[00:38:15] Cops?

[00:38:16] Sure

[00:38:17] Sure

[00:38:17] He's a cop

[00:38:18] I can tell

[00:38:19] I'm a mile away

[00:38:21] Yeah

[00:38:22] You must really

[00:38:23] be hot

[00:38:24] mister

[00:38:40] It's easy to say

[00:38:40] now that I know

[00:38:41] what I should have

[00:38:41] done

[00:38:42] Mr. Commissioner

[00:38:42] I should have

[00:38:43] gone up to this guy

[00:38:43] and had a showdown

[00:38:44] right then and there

[00:38:45] But panic

[00:38:46] is a funny thing

[00:38:47] It begins

[00:38:48] almost before you

[00:38:49] know it

[00:38:49] and there's

[00:38:49] no cure for it

[00:38:51] No cure at all

[00:38:53] I began hurrying

[00:38:54] as fast as I could

[00:38:56] And I didn't stop

[00:38:57] until my wind

[00:38:57] gave out

[00:38:58] and my legs

[00:38:58] weighed a ton

[00:39:00] Then I looked back

[00:39:03] I'd lost my friend

[00:39:04] in the white suit

[00:39:06] But for how long?

[00:39:11] I had to find a place

[00:39:12] to sleep that night

[00:39:14] I saw this little hotel

[00:39:15] on a side street

[00:39:17] straighten my tie

[00:39:18] wiped the sweat

[00:39:19] off my face

[00:39:21] started through the lobby

[00:39:24] There was no one

[00:39:25] at the desk

[00:39:26] I rang the desk bell

[00:39:28] Little fellow

[00:39:29] with glasses

[00:39:29] came out

[00:39:31] Yeah?

[00:39:32] I'd like a room

[00:39:33] Great, sir

[00:39:34] A dollar and a half

[00:39:35] in advance

[00:39:36] That's all right

[00:39:38] No luggage, huh?

[00:39:39] No, I'm

[00:39:40] just staying overnight

[00:39:42] That's all right

[00:39:43] Very few of them

[00:39:44] bring any luggage

[00:39:46] What's your name?

[00:39:47] Huh?

[00:39:48] Just what's your name

[00:39:49] for the hotel registers, huh?

[00:39:51] My name

[00:39:52] My name is Bronson

[00:39:55] Howard Bronson

[00:39:57] Howard Bronson

[00:39:59] I thought for a minute

[00:40:00] you were going to say

[00:40:01] you were one of the

[00:40:01] Smith boys

[00:40:04] Here's the key

[00:40:05] Mr. Bronson

[00:40:06] Okay

[00:40:07] Now for the dollar and a half

[00:40:08] Yeah, here

[00:40:09] Twenty dollars?

[00:40:11] Is that the smallest

[00:40:12] job?

[00:40:12] That's all I have

[00:40:13] All right

[00:40:13] I suppose I can change it

[00:40:15] You sure it's good?

[00:40:16] Didn't make it yourself

[00:40:17] now, did you?

[00:40:18] It's good

[00:40:19] Oh, no offense

[00:40:20] Just my own little job

[00:40:21] Okay

[00:40:22] I'll take another nickel

[00:40:23] out for this newspaper

[00:40:23] Sure thing

[00:40:24] Sure thing

[00:40:26] And here's your change

[00:40:29] Now why don't you

[00:40:30] go up to bed?

[00:40:32] You look very tired

[00:40:35] I tried to sleep

[00:40:36] but it was no use

[00:40:38] Why had that man

[00:40:39] in the white suit

[00:40:40] followed me?

[00:40:41] What had I done?

[00:40:42] Not knowing

[00:40:44] Not knowing

[00:40:45] almost drove me

[00:40:45] out of my mind

[00:40:48] Out of my mind

[00:40:49] I was already

[00:40:50] out of my mind

[00:40:52] And finally

[00:40:53] I must have dozed off

[00:40:55] because I was suddenly

[00:40:56] in the middle

[00:40:56] of a terrible nightmare

[00:40:57] I won't give it up

[00:41:06] I won't stay

[00:41:07] Leave me alone

[00:41:09] Leave me alone

[00:41:11] Leave me alone

[00:41:12] Mr. Branson

[00:41:28] Mr. Branson

[00:41:29] What?

[00:41:30] Are you all right

[00:41:31] Mr. Branson?

[00:41:32] Yeah

[00:41:33] Yes, I'm all right

[00:41:34] Who is it?

[00:41:36] Would you open the door

[00:41:37] for a minute?

[00:41:39] Yeah

[00:41:42] Come in

[00:41:44] Several of the guests

[00:41:45] heard you screaming

[00:41:47] There's nothing

[00:41:47] Just a nightmare

[00:41:48] I guess

[00:41:48] I'm all right now

[00:41:50] I'm glad to hear that

[00:41:51] Is that all you wanted

[00:41:52] to know?

[00:41:53] Not exactly

[00:41:55] What?

[00:41:56] A detective

[00:41:57] came in a while ago

[00:41:58] inquiring about somebody

[00:42:00] Detective?

[00:42:01] Yeah

[00:42:01] City detective

[00:42:02] That is according

[00:42:03] to the badge

[00:42:04] he showed me

[00:42:04] Who did he want?

[00:42:05] No one named Branson

[00:42:07] Then why are you

[00:42:08] bothering me for?

[00:42:09] It wasn't Branson

[00:42:10] he asked for

[00:42:10] but his description

[00:42:12] of the man

[00:42:12] fitted you exactly

[00:42:15] How long ago

[00:42:15] was he here?

[00:42:16] Oh, about 20 minutes ago

[00:42:17] Your name is Branson

[00:42:19] Yeah, sure

[00:42:20] You know it's technically

[00:42:21] against law

[00:42:22] to register under an

[00:42:23] My name's Branson

[00:42:24] Okay

[00:42:25] Just wanted to make sure

[00:42:26] of that

[00:42:26] He must have wanted

[00:42:27] somebody else

[00:42:28] Says he's been checking up

[00:42:30] on all the hotels

[00:42:30] in this neighborhood

[00:42:31] Says he might drop back

[00:42:33] later

[00:42:33] What did he look like?

[00:42:35] Oh, tall fella

[00:42:35] kind of slim

[00:42:36] wearing a white

[00:42:37] summer suit

[00:42:38] White summer suit?

[00:42:40] Yeah

[00:42:40] You don't see many

[00:42:41] of those nowadays

[00:42:41] Do you?

[00:42:43] No

[00:42:44] Yeah, you sure

[00:42:45] you're over your nightmare

[00:42:46] Yeah, I'm alright now

[00:42:47] Okay, then

[00:42:48] Good night, Mr. Branson

[00:42:49] Night

[00:42:49] Oh, say

[00:42:50] Yeah

[00:42:52] That fellow does come back

[00:42:53] The detective?

[00:42:54] Yeah, the detective

[00:42:54] If he does come back

[00:42:55] let me know

[00:42:56] I just want both him

[00:42:57] and you to make sure

[00:42:58] I'm not the one

[00:42:59] he's looking for

[00:42:59] Okay, Mr. Branson

[00:43:01] Good night

[00:43:04] After that

[00:43:05] I didn't want to sleep

[00:43:06] I got very jittery

[00:43:07] I paced the room

[00:43:09] I smoked one cigarette

[00:43:11] after another

[00:43:13] Why had I said that

[00:43:14] to the clerk?

[00:43:14] I couldn't be so

[00:43:15] lily white

[00:43:16] with that fifty grand

[00:43:17] strapped to me

[00:43:19] Still, maybe it would

[00:43:20] be better to have it

[00:43:21] out with the guy

[00:43:21] once and for all

[00:43:24] Finally, I forced

[00:43:25] myself to sit down

[00:43:26] I picked up the paper

[00:43:27] and started to read

[00:43:29] The front page was

[00:43:30] filled with news

[00:43:31] of a war

[00:43:31] I couldn't even recall

[00:43:32] and names that meant

[00:43:33] nothing to the shadow

[00:43:34] that had engulfed my mind

[00:43:37] But down in the corner

[00:43:38] of the front page

[00:43:38] what was this?

[00:43:40] A detective

[00:43:41] slain on train

[00:43:42] Detective slain on train

[00:43:44] George Bailey

[00:43:45] Chicago detective

[00:43:46] Bailey

[00:43:47] The man in my nightmare

[00:43:48] was found dead

[00:43:49] this morning

[00:43:50] in a romette

[00:43:50] on a westbound train

[00:43:51] Police officials report

[00:43:53] that he was on the trail

[00:43:53] of one Joe Latterley

[00:43:55] who is believed

[00:43:56] to have killed

[00:43:57] the detective

[00:43:58] during an attempted arrest

[00:43:59] Police throughout the state

[00:44:00] are on the lookout

[00:44:01] for Latterley

[00:44:03] now he is known

[00:44:04] to be carrying

[00:44:04] fifty thousand

[00:44:07] dollars

[00:44:07] in stolen currency

[00:44:10] fifty thousand

[00:44:11] dollars

[00:44:13] in stolen currency

[00:44:16] Now what was I gonna do?

[00:44:30] I was not only a thief

[00:44:31] I was a killer

[00:44:33] but funny thing

[00:44:35] somehow I didn't feel

[00:44:36] like a killer

[00:44:38] I didn't feel

[00:44:39] like a killer at all

[00:44:42] Mr. Branson

[00:44:44] Say that detective

[00:44:45] came back

[00:44:46] he's here with me now

[00:44:48] he'd like to talk to you

[00:44:49] Detective?

[00:44:51] Oh yeah

[00:44:51] sure

[00:44:51] be glad to talk to him

[00:44:53] Well

[00:44:54] wait just a second though

[00:44:55] I'll

[00:44:56] I'll throw some clothes on

[00:44:58] No thank you

[00:44:59] I wasn't having

[00:44:59] any of this

[00:45:00] the only thing

[00:45:00] I could think about

[00:45:01] was to get away

[00:45:02] I rushed to the window

[00:45:03] raised it

[00:45:04] a fire escape

[00:45:05] led right down

[00:45:06] to a back alley

[00:45:07] Open up Mr. Branson

[00:45:08] I slid over the sill

[00:45:09] and started down

[00:45:09] the fire escape

[00:45:10] As I raced down the steps

[00:45:12] I heard excited voices

[00:45:12] above me

[00:45:13] and then

[00:45:15] they were shooting at me

[00:45:16] This was a new sensation

[00:45:18] Mr. Commissioner

[00:45:18] and not exactly

[00:45:19] the most pleasant feeling

[00:45:20] in the world

[00:45:22] Well that convinced me

[00:45:23] I was a killer

[00:45:25] a killer at bay

[00:45:40] What could I do?

[00:45:41] Where could I go?

[00:45:42] It was almost midnight

[00:45:44] There was not one person

[00:45:45] in the world

[00:45:46] that I could turn to

[00:45:46] that I knew

[00:45:48] I didn't even know

[00:45:49] my own name

[00:45:50] I didn't

[00:45:51] Wait a minute

[00:45:52] Wait a minute

[00:45:53] Yes

[00:45:54] Yes I did know

[00:45:56] my own name

[00:45:57] Joe Latterly

[00:45:58] the newspaper said

[00:45:59] Joe Latterly

[00:46:01] I saw an all night

[00:46:02] drugstore down the block

[00:46:04] I closed myself

[00:46:05] in the phone booth there

[00:46:05] started thumbing

[00:46:07] through the directory

[00:46:08] Sure enough

[00:46:09] there it was

[00:46:09] Joe Latterly

[00:46:12] I wrote down

[00:46:13] my address

[00:46:13] began dialing

[00:46:15] my telephone number

[00:46:16] and while

[00:46:23] the number rang

[00:46:24] I felt a cold sweat

[00:46:26] come rolling down

[00:46:26] my face and neck

[00:46:29] soak into my collar

[00:46:33] Hello

[00:46:35] this the Latterly residence?

[00:46:36] Yeah

[00:46:40] This is Joe

[00:46:42] Joe

[00:46:42] Yeah

[00:46:44] It don't sound like you

[00:46:46] I had a little accident

[00:46:46] You get the money?

[00:46:48] Yeah

[00:46:48] Any trouble?

[00:46:54] Look I better see you

[00:46:54] right away

[00:46:55] Yeah but don't come here

[00:46:56] the cops are thick as flies

[00:46:58] You better meet me

[00:46:59] at the usual place

[00:46:59] The usual place?

[00:47:01] Yeah yeah

[00:47:02] at Mom's

[00:47:02] Okay

[00:47:02] at Mom's

[00:47:03] Oh hey look

[00:47:04] this accident

[00:47:05] kind of messed up my memory

[00:47:07] what's Mom's address again?

[00:47:08] 229

[00:47:09] 229

[00:47:10] 9th Street

[00:47:11] apartment 204

[00:47:12] 204

[00:47:13] Okay I'll see you there

[00:47:14] Gee you sure sound funny

[00:47:15] Joe what happened?

[00:47:16] I'll tell you about it

[00:47:16] when I see you

[00:47:17] So I had a wife

[00:47:28] and she was in on everything

[00:47:30] You see Commissioner

[00:47:31] the jigsaw puzzle

[00:47:32] was beginning to make some sense

[00:47:34] A wife

[00:47:35] I couldn't even remember

[00:47:36] the color of her hair

[00:47:38] If only I could

[00:47:39] break through the shadow

[00:47:41] Ten minutes later

[00:47:42] I was standing in the entrance

[00:47:43] of a very classy

[00:47:44] apartment hotel lobby

[00:47:45] not a soul in sight

[00:47:47] As I began looking down

[00:47:48] the list of numbers

[00:47:49] for the right doorbell to ring

[00:47:51] I felt myself going shaky again

[00:47:54] There it was

[00:47:55] 204

[00:47:55] I pushed the bell

[00:47:58] I waited

[00:47:59] Then the door buzzer sounded

[00:48:01] I pushed open the door

[00:48:02] and started across the lobby

[00:48:04] No one in sight

[00:48:05] No one

[00:48:07] That was a break

[00:48:09] Pulled my hat down

[00:48:10] over my eyes

[00:48:11] as I started up the steps

[00:48:13] See I was beginning

[00:48:14] to think like a hunted man

[00:48:15] like a killer

[00:48:17] I took the stairs

[00:48:18] to the second floor

[00:48:20] I started down the hall

[00:48:23] 200

[00:48:28] 202

[00:48:28] The next door

[00:48:29] 204

[00:48:31] The door was ajar

[00:48:33] I wanted to call my wife

[00:48:35] but what was her name?

[00:48:38] Honey?

[00:48:40] Honey are you there?

[00:48:43] No answer

[00:48:44] I pushed the door open

[00:48:47] The room was in darkness

[00:48:50] I felt along the wall

[00:48:51] for a light switch

[00:48:54] Found it

[00:48:55] And there

[00:48:56] waiting for me

[00:48:57] was this detective

[00:48:58] The tall skinny guy

[00:48:59] in the white suit

[00:49:01] I let my nerves take over

[00:49:07] I jumped from the room

[00:49:08] slammed the door shut

[00:49:09] and started running again

[00:49:19] But this time

[00:49:20] he had a better chance

[00:49:21] at me than before

[00:49:22] As I hurried through

[00:49:23] the empty streets

[00:49:24] I could hear him

[00:49:24] coming right behind me

[00:49:26] I ducked down alleys

[00:49:27] and across backyards

[00:49:28] He was right on my tail

[00:49:31] I couldn't run much further

[00:49:32] I was all pooped out

[00:49:34] Then I bumped smack

[00:49:35] into somebody

[00:49:35] Hey!

[00:49:37] Watch where you're going

[00:49:39] I didn't see you officer

[00:49:40] Well I'm not exactly

[00:49:41] an officer

[00:49:42] I'm a night watch

[00:49:44] Who are you running from?

[00:49:46] Nobody

[00:49:46] Nobody at all

[00:49:48] I looked up and down

[00:49:49] the dark street

[00:49:50] The detective

[00:49:51] was nowhere in sight

[00:49:52] I don't know

[00:49:53] You weren't exactly

[00:49:54] strolling along

[00:49:56] Come over here

[00:49:57] to the street light

[00:49:58] Let me take a look at you

[00:50:00] Hmm

[00:50:01] Well

[00:50:01] You must know

[00:50:03] I

[00:50:03] I got in a little jam

[00:50:04] with a lady

[00:50:05] Oh well

[00:50:06] Oh so that's it

[00:50:07] The way you run

[00:50:09] I bet you're a hard man

[00:50:10] to catch

[00:50:11] Yeah

[00:50:12] Well get on with you

[00:50:13] and be more careful

[00:50:15] next time

[00:50:15] You may not always

[00:50:16] get a head start

[00:50:17] I guess that's right

[00:50:19] Good night to you

[00:50:20] Oh

[00:50:20] Yeah

[00:50:21] I live on the other

[00:50:22] side of town

[00:50:23] What's the quickest way

[00:50:23] to get home?

[00:50:24] Yeah

[00:50:25] There's an elevated

[00:50:26] train station

[00:50:27] two blocks from here

[00:50:28] That's your best bet

[00:50:29] Okay

[00:50:30] You better hurry though

[00:50:31] Last train pulls in

[00:50:32] at one o'clock

[00:50:33] and it's pretty close

[00:50:34] to that right now

[00:50:34] I'll hurry

[00:50:35] Night

[00:50:36] I began walking again

[00:50:42] Once I got away

[00:50:43] from this neighborhood

[00:50:43] I'd have a chance

[00:50:45] Chance for what?

[00:50:47] I wasn't sure

[00:50:49] But a man with

[00:50:49] 50,000 bucks

[00:50:50] could do a lot

[00:50:51] of maneuvering

[00:50:52] I saw the lights

[00:50:53] of the elevated

[00:50:53] station ahead

[00:50:54] and in the quiet night

[00:50:55] I heard the rumble

[00:50:55] of the approaching train

[00:50:56] The last train

[00:50:57] I started jogging

[00:50:58] I couldn't have

[00:50:58] missed that train

[00:50:59] Hey

[00:50:59] Wait up you

[00:51:00] Took a quick glance

[00:51:01] over my shoulder

[00:51:02] It was him again

[00:51:02] My friend in the white suit

[00:51:04] I raced up the steps

[00:51:05] three at a time

[00:51:07] When I got to the top

[00:51:07] he was at the bottom

[00:51:08] Stop

[00:51:09] or I'll kill you

[00:51:10] I'd never heard

[00:51:11] a deadlier sound

[00:51:12] than that voice

[00:51:13] The last train

[00:51:13] was just pulling in

[00:51:15] The detective

[00:51:15] was coming up the stairs

[00:51:16] kind of slow

[00:51:17] For some reason

[00:51:17] I didn't have time

[00:51:18] to figure out

[00:51:27] The door swung open

[00:51:28] I got in

[00:51:29] The doors closed

[00:51:30] and the train

[00:51:31] was on its way

[00:51:32] I looked back

[00:51:34] The detective

[00:51:34] was standing on the platform

[00:51:35] just looking at the train

[00:51:36] I didn't get it

[00:51:38] Why hadn't he come after me?

[00:51:40] I couldn't figure it

[00:51:42] Then I decided

[00:51:42] I'd better get some information

[00:51:43] from the conductor

[00:51:45] Say could you help me?

[00:51:47] Yeah sure

[00:51:48] What do you want to know?

[00:51:49] Where's this train go?

[00:51:50] 63rd Street

[00:51:51] 63rd Street

[00:51:52] Can I get the state highway

[00:51:54] from there?

[00:51:54] No you're going

[00:51:55] the opposite way

[00:51:57] I've kind of mixed up

[00:51:58] my directions

[00:51:58] The only way to get

[00:52:00] where you're going

[00:52:00] is to take another car

[00:52:01] back to the loop

[00:52:02] Thanks

[00:52:04] That was what I wanted to know

[00:52:06] I decided to get off

[00:52:07] in a block or two

[00:52:08] in case the cop

[00:52:08] was waiting for me

[00:52:09] at 63rd

[00:52:10] He must have figured

[00:52:11] he could beat me there

[00:52:12] He'd probably have

[00:52:13] quite a little

[00:52:14] reception committee

[00:52:15] waiting

[00:52:16] So I got up

[00:52:17] started to walk

[00:52:17] to the door

[00:52:18] Hey

[00:52:19] Yeah

[00:52:19] Where you going?

[00:52:21] You said I was

[00:52:22] going the wrong way

[00:52:22] I'm going to get off

[00:52:23] at the next stop

[00:52:24] You can't get off

[00:52:25] until 63rd Street

[00:52:26] This is an express

[00:52:35] I was just about

[00:52:35] ready to crack

[00:52:37] I knew it'd be

[00:52:38] curtains for me

[00:52:38] as soon as I

[00:52:39] got off the train

[00:52:40] I kept hoping

[00:52:41] for a miracle

[00:52:42] Maybe the train

[00:52:43] would crack up

[00:52:44] or stop one station

[00:52:46] too soon

[00:52:46] or it was no use

[00:52:52] Finally the conductor

[00:52:53] called the station

[00:52:57] and the half dozen

[00:52:58] sleepy passengers

[00:52:59] started getting up

[00:53:00] and heading for the doors

[00:53:01] Then I got an idea

[00:53:03] Maybe I could stay

[00:53:04] in the car

[00:53:04] Maybe I could wait

[00:53:11] When the last passenger

[00:53:12] got out

[00:53:12] the conductor

[00:53:13] looked over at me

[00:53:14] This is where you

[00:53:15] transfer back to the loop

[00:53:17] Where does the train go?

[00:53:19] Up a few blocks

[00:53:19] and we turn around

[00:53:20] and head back

[00:53:21] Couldn't I go back with you?

[00:53:22] Sorry

[00:53:22] You gotta get out here

[00:53:23] and cross the bridge

[00:53:24] Oh but I don't see any

[00:53:25] I don't make the rules

[00:53:26] buddy

[00:53:27] The company makes them

[00:53:27] for me

[00:53:28] I tell you

[00:53:28] I'm just going

[00:53:29] Hey

[00:53:30] What's the matter?

[00:53:30] There's somebody

[00:53:31] behind you

[00:53:31] Just come with me

[00:53:33] I got a gun

[00:53:34] right against your back

[00:53:36] It was him

[00:53:38] I felt the gun

[00:53:39] rubbing against my spine

[00:53:40] I had only one chance

[00:53:44] So I whipped around

[00:53:45] I was lucky

[00:53:45] I caught him

[00:53:46] with a hard right

[00:53:47] and he went down

[00:53:47] I jumped fast

[00:53:48] and got his service revolver

[00:53:49] He didn't stay down long though

[00:53:51] As he got up

[00:53:51] and lunged at me

[00:53:52] I let him have it

[00:53:53] Right between the eyes

[00:54:08] So there's my story

[00:54:09] Mr. Police Commissioner

[00:54:11] I'm Joe Latterly

[00:54:13] I killed two cops

[00:54:15] One today

[00:54:15] and one last week

[00:54:17] I stole 50,000 bucks

[00:54:19] and I'm tired

[00:54:22] of the whole thing

[00:54:22] I'm glad it's over

[00:54:25] It's quite a story

[00:54:26] Mr.

[00:54:27] I don't suppose

[00:54:28] you remember how

[00:54:29] or why

[00:54:30] Detective Bailey

[00:54:31] was killed last week

[00:54:32] on that train

[00:54:33] out of Chicago

[00:54:34] No

[00:54:35] Well

[00:54:36] we've reconstructed

[00:54:37] the crime

[00:54:38] pretty well

[00:54:38] we think

[00:54:39] Began a week ago

[00:54:41] when a fellow

[00:54:41] named Steve Roycroft

[00:54:43] came to headquarters

[00:54:44] with a complaint

[00:54:45] against one of his employees

[00:54:47] whom he suspected

[00:54:48] of embezzling

[00:54:48] $50,000

[00:54:49] And that employee

[00:54:51] was Joe Latterly

[00:54:52] I see

[00:54:55] Latterly had disappeared

[00:54:56] and Detective Murphy

[00:54:58] was assigned to the case

[00:54:59] Later that day

[00:55:01] he found Latterly

[00:55:02] taking the morning train

[00:55:03] out of Chicago

[00:55:04] He called Roycroft

[00:55:06] and told him about it

[00:55:07] Well Roycroft

[00:55:09] and Murphy

[00:55:09] made the train

[00:55:10] on Latterly's trail

[00:55:12] They confronted him

[00:55:13] and got back

[00:55:14] the 50 grand

[00:55:15] Who got the money back?

[00:55:16] The man

[00:55:17] it rightfully belonged to

[00:55:19] Steve Roycroft

[00:55:21] Well where did I

[00:55:22] Just a minute

[00:55:23] Just a minute

[00:55:25] Roycroft

[00:55:25] got his money back

[00:55:26] but Latterly

[00:55:27] made another try

[00:55:28] He overpowered Murphy

[00:55:30] and killed him

[00:55:30] He would have killed

[00:55:32] Roycroft too

[00:55:33] but Roycroft

[00:55:34] jumped for his life

[00:55:35] from the speeding train

[00:55:36] Wait a minute

[00:55:37] Wait a minute

[00:55:37] You got it wrong

[00:55:37] I jumped from the train

[00:55:39] remember?

[00:55:41] Exactly

[00:55:41] But you just said

[00:55:42] You're not Joe Latterly

[00:55:44] my friend

[00:55:45] You are Steve Roycroft

[00:55:48] When you got your money

[00:55:49] and jumped from the train

[00:55:51] you lost your memory

[00:55:53] Then when you read

[00:55:55] that we were looking

[00:55:56] for the killer

[00:55:56] Latterly

[00:55:58] you naturally assumed

[00:55:59] that you were him

[00:56:01] Of course

[00:56:02] we thought Latterly

[00:56:03] still had the money

[00:56:05] Good heavens

[00:56:06] What's the matter now?

[00:56:08] Well

[00:56:08] Don't you realize

[00:56:09] what I've done?

[00:56:10] What?

[00:56:10] Well thinking I was

[00:56:11] Joe Latterly

[00:56:12] I killed the detective

[00:56:13] who was trying

[00:56:13] to bring me in

[00:56:14] Detective?

[00:56:14] Yes just now

[00:56:15] on the elevated platform

[00:56:16] Oh but that wasn't

[00:56:17] a detective at all

[00:56:18] But then who

[00:56:19] He was Joe Latterly

[00:56:21] trying to get back

[00:56:22] his money

[00:56:23] or should I say

[00:56:25] your money

[00:56:27] Joe Latterly

[00:56:28] That's right

[00:56:29] And there won't

[00:56:30] be any charges

[00:56:32] You killed him

[00:56:32] in self-defense

[00:56:34] Yes it was

[00:56:35] Joe Latterly

[00:56:36] all the time

[00:56:37] That's why you

[00:56:38] met him

[00:56:38] in that apartment

[00:56:40] It was his hideout

[00:56:43] I know this

[00:56:44] has been a great

[00:56:45] shock to you

[00:56:45] Mr. Roycroft

[00:56:47] Shock yeah

[00:56:48] You're not well

[00:56:50] You need rest

[00:56:52] I've sent for an ambulance

[00:56:53] to take you

[00:56:53] to the hospital

[00:56:56] Psychiatrist there

[00:56:56] will be able

[00:56:57] to help you recover

[00:56:58] the balance

[00:56:58] of your memory

[00:56:59] I hope so

[00:57:02] I hope they can

[00:57:03] make me forget

[00:57:04] where

[00:57:05] what I thought

[00:57:06] I was

[00:57:07] How do you mean?

[00:57:10] I've lived

[00:57:11] the life of

[00:57:11] Joe Latterly

[00:57:12] too well

[00:57:14] He's done

[00:57:15] something to me

[00:57:17] I'd begun to think

[00:57:18] like he must have

[00:57:19] thought

[00:57:20] Like a hunted

[00:57:21] killer

[00:57:22] It's not going

[00:57:24] to be easy

[00:57:24] to return

[00:57:25] to the

[00:57:26] commonplace

[00:57:27] routine existence

[00:57:28] of this Steve Roycroft

[00:57:30] after what I've

[00:57:31] been through

[00:57:33] I hope

[00:57:35] I won't become

[00:57:36] too bored

[00:57:38] Mr. Commissioner

[00:57:54] Next week

[00:57:55] at the same time

[00:57:56] over most of

[00:57:57] these stations

[00:57:58] we'll bring you

[00:57:59] another original story

[00:58:01] about the land

[00:58:02] of the shadows

[00:58:02] the story

[00:58:04] of two killers

[00:58:05] and of retribution

[00:58:06] out of the forgotten

[00:58:07] past

[00:58:08] Join us then

[00:58:10] to examine

[00:58:10] at first hand

[00:58:11] the strange

[00:58:13] impulses

[00:58:13] which urge

[00:58:15] human beings

[00:58:16] into their

[00:58:16] dark

[00:58:17] venture
