[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_13]: The Thought.

[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Pleasure and amazement, the 78 Club presents The Great Marlowe, The Mental Marvel.

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Gifted with a seven cents, The Great Marlowe reads your minds, tells you every thought.

[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Now let me warn you, if you have a secret you don't want him to know, just don't think about it.

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Presenting The Great Marlowe.

[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_13]: Thank you. Frankly I can't explain the performance you're about to witness.

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_13]: Science, without explaining it, calls it telepathy, thought transfer.

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_13]: I call it hokum.

[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_13]: The gentleman says it's hokum. Maybe. We'll see.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_13]: Now everybody in this room concentrate. Think of a thing or a person. Concentrate.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_13]: Think hard. Ah, I have a thought.

[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_13]: Someone is thinking of the initials SG. Will the person thinking of SG please rise?

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been thinking of SG.

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_13]: Well thank you. Young lady, you are concentrating on the name of Stanley Green. Is that right?

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Well yes.

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Stanley is in the army I believe. Correct.

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, he's a side gen.

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_13]: And you want me to tell you Stanley's serial number. It's 3400767. Is that correct?

[00:02:37] Yes.

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_13]: Another thought. Someone is thinking. Someone is thinking.

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_13]: Ladies and gentlemen, please bear with me a moment. I'll have to stop this performance.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_13]: Please be it's important. I'll be back very shortly.

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I told you it was hokum. What happened Professor? Forget your code!

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_13]: Hey, what's the idea of stopping the act that way? Where's your telephone, Rector Moreno?

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_13]: What are you trying to do? Ruin my club's reputation?

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_13]: Shut up Moreno. Where's your...

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh here. Now listen Marlowe, I'm paying you two grand a week.

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_13]: I expect to get my money's worth.

[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_13]: Listen will you please leave just as soon as I'm through with this call I'll finish the act.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright but make it snappy. And close the door.

[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_13]: I should like to speak to Helen Thornton.

[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_07]: This is Mrs. Thornton.

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen Thornton?

[00:03:40] Yes, who's this?

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_13]: My name is Marlowe. I'm a telepathist performing at the 78 Club.

[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_13]: A few moments ago during my act I received a thought that is vital to you. Are you alone?

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_13]: Yes.

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_13]: Do as I say please. Lock all your windows and doors. Allow no one in under any circumstances unless...

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_09]: Is this someone's idea of a practical joke?

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_13]: No Mrs. Thornton, this is no joke. Someone here in this night club is planning to kill you.

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Hello?

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_05]: This is Mildred Helen. I just got in.

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh I've been trying to get you for hours. I know it's very late but could you come over?

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Helen what's the matter?

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Mildred I'm so frightened. I'm alone here.

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Where's Jack?

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_05]: He's out of town and it's Marie's night off. Mildred I don't know what to do.

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_07]: What's wrong?

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Mildred will you come over right away please? You can spend the night.

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Helen over.

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_05]: No Mildred, it's alright now. Jack's come home.

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_05]: What was the matter?

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_05]: I'll speak to you tomorrow.

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Jack!

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_07]: Helen what's the matter?

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen darling. Helen!

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen for pity's sake what is it? Pull yourself together darling. Here come on over here.

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh yeah that's Mary. Now what is it darling?

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh Jack I'm so glad you're home. It's been awful. I didn't expect you when I heard the door.

[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_13]: Well I finished my business in New York sooner than I'd planned. I would have worried but I thought I'd surprise you.

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_13]: I met Fred Hamilton on the train coming home. Remember the buyer from St. Louis? He stopped off for a drink downtown.

[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh Jack you should have called me.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_13]: Matter of fact I did try to phone you around 11. I tried to get you just as we were leaving the 78 club.

[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_05]: The 78 club? You were there? You...

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_05]: What is it darling?

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Nothing. I'm alright now.

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Something is wrong Helen what is it?

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_05]: I guess I was just frightened of being alone.

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_13]: Well you've been alone before many times.

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes but that call...

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_13]: What call?

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Well the police. They called. There was a robbery in the neighborhood.

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh so that's it. That's why the door was double locked.

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_13]: Well darling there's nothing to worry about now. I'm here right?

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes Jack you're here.

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_13]: There that's better. Good night's sleep and you'll be as good isn't you?

[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes Jack.

[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_13]: Now you lie there and relax darling. I'll go to the kitchen and make you a cup of warm milk.

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Thanks Jack.

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Paul it's Helen. Didn't you get my message? I called twice.

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes but I just got in. I thought you'd be asleep by now.

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Paul you must help me. Please please Paul there isn't much time.

[00:07:06] Helen what's the trouble?

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_05]: He's going to kill me.

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_05]: What are you...

[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack's going to kill me Paul. He came tonight...

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_09]: Helen what are you talking about?

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Paul you must believe me.

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_09]: No listen Helen. You've probably had a bad dream. Is Jack there?

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes please. You must believe me. I know what he's going to do.

[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_09]: Well we'll straighten this thing out. Let me speak to Jack.

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_05]: No no no you mustn't. Please listen to me.

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_05]: He's coming now. You'll never see me again alive.

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Goodbye Paul.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't bother folding up the dresses Marie. Just throw them in.

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Isn't this kind of sudden you're going away?

[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't ask questions Marie. Hurry please here. Now help me close this suitcase.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_05]: You finish packing the other suitcase. I'm going down to get the car out of the garage.

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_13]: Morning Helen.

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack.

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_13]: You look so surprised to see me.

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Marie said you'd gone. I didn't expect...

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_13]: Well I decided to come back. See I caught you in time.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I had to go.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I was just going over to Mildred.

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_13]: So early in the morning?

[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_05]: We have an appointment for golf.

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_13]: In those clothes?

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Well...

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh darling you're right.

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen I'll tell you why I came back this morning.

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_13]: Frankly I'm worried about you.

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Something's on your mind. I know it.

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_13]: Won't you tell me what it is?

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm all right.

[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_13]: Okay now listen to me.

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_13]: I had some very important business to settle in the office with Paul this morning.

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_13]: But you come first.

[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_05]: You saw Paul this morning?

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_13]: No I changed my mind on the way down and came back.

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen you need a rest.

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_13]: You and I are going away.

[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_05]: No Jack no...

[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Now there's no use arguing.

[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_13]: I've already made a reservation for the week.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Where?

[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Where are you taking me Jack?

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_13]: Remember that cabin we stayed at three years ago?

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_13]: It'll be wonderful. Just the two of us all along.

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_13]: We'll drive out there tomorrow.

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_13]: Now there's no need to fuss.

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_13]: Either just a few old duds and my rifles...

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Your rifle?

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_13]: Just darling my gun.

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_13]: The hunting season is on.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_13]: The shooting at Lone Acres should be very good this year.

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_13]: Don't be ridiculous Helen.

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_13]: Well that's what you told me over the phone last night.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_13]: He changed his plan.

[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh I see.

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_13]: And why Mrs. Thornton is your husband going to kill you?

[00:09:59] Because...

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Because he's jealous of you.

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Jealous of me?

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_05]: He knows what we once meant to each other before I married him.

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_13]: Of course he does so what?

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_13]: Why he's winning you is a standard joke between Jack and me.

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_13]: Rivals in love, partners in business and all that stuff.

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_13]: Come on snap out of it.

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_13]: I think I'd better talk to Jack about you.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_05]: No no Paul you mustn't.

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Promise me you won't.

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright Helen if you say so.

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_05]: It's just what you need Helen.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_05]: I'll never come back alive.

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_13]: No Helen.

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_13]: Your imagination is overworked that's all.

[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_13]: You should go to Lone Acres for a rest.

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_13]: It will do you a world of good.

[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Alright Paul I'll go.

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_05]: But I'm so frightened.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_05]: So frightened.

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Paul we'll be alone and he'll have his gun.

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_13]: You know Helen sometimes I think I love this gun more than I do you.

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_13]: There it's okay now.

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_13]: Clean as a whistle and fit for the work at hand.

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_13]: Hey look the fog's lifting.

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_13]: You can see clear across the valley.

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_13]: No we'll get in some hunting today after all.

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen what's the matter?

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_13]: You haven't said a word since breakfast.

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm alright.

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I've been wanting to finish this story.

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_13]: The Golden Goblet Murders.

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_13]: You know detective stories hand me a laugh.

[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_13]: Now if I were planning a murder I'd use a gun like this Springfield.

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_13]: Just say for instance I wanted to kill.

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_13]: Well say I wanted to kill.

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_13]: Me?

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright.

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Say I wanted to kill you.

[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_13]: Now let's see we have to have a motive don't we?

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_13]: I'd have it.

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_13]: Motive? Jealousy.

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Jealousy?

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Yes I'm jealous of Paul Allen that's it.

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm jealous of Paul.

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't want to talk about it.

[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh come on darling be a sport.

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Our murder plot is just beginning to get interesting.

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_13]: Now let's see we need a locale.

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_13]: Well Lone Acres right here.

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_13]: What a perfect setting for a perfect murder.

[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_13]: And now for the time.

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes Jack when are you going to kill me?

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Well I shouldn't really tell you when I plan to kill you but I'll give you a break.

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_13]: This afternoon.

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_13]: How's that?

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_13]: We'll be out in the woods hunting.

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_13]: No one will be too near.

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_13]: No one to see what happens.

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_13]: The hunting season.

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_13]: A gun shot.

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_13]: You're dead.

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_13]: A regrettable accident.

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_13]: And there's our perfect murder.

[00:13:00] The

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_13]: discovered that someone wishes to murder her.

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_13]: A mental telepathist performing at a nightclub read the thought from among the guests.

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_13]: Later Helen was shocked to learn that one of the guests present in the nightclub was her husband Jack.

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_13]: She fears that he might want to kill her because of his jealousy of Paul, a former suitor.

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_13]: Her anxiety is heightened and her husband suggests that they go away for a weekend to Lone Acres an isolated hunting lodge.

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_13]: Once there Jack tells her it's a perfect setting for a possible perfect crime.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_13]: Her murder.

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_13]: A hunting accident in the woods.

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_08]: Here up this way.

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_08]: All this path around the bend here.

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack.

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah?

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Would you mind if I went back to the cabin?

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_08]: Well there's a clearing up here darling we'll stop for a rest.

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_08]: Helen.

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_08]: Yes?

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_08]: I'm going to circle this hill you wait right there for me.

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack.

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack please don't leave me here alone.

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_13]: Mr Thornton.

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_13]: But doctor I don't understand how it happened.

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_13]: Mr Thornton it's really nothing serious just a shoulder flesh wound.

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_13]: Your wife is perfectly alright.

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_13]: Well when may I see her?

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_13]: Right now we'll go in right now.

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_13]: Thank you.

[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_13]: She's asleep.

[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_13]: Go ahead wake her up.

[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_13]: She'll feel better knowing you're here.

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen.

[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen darling.

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_13]: It's me Helen.

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_13]: Jack.

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_13]: Mrs Thornton.

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_13]: It's your husband.

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Doctor get him out of here.

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_05]: He's going to kill me.

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Please doctor you must save me.

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_13]: Mr Thornton perhaps you better leave the room for a while.

[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright doctor I'll wait outside.

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Doctor, doctor please don't let him in here again.

[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_05]: You must believe me he's planning to kill me.

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_13]: Mrs Thornton what happened was an accident.

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_05]: That's what he wants you to think.

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_05]: He planned it that way but it wasn't an accident.

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_13]: Now Mrs Thornton it's perfectly natural in a case like this that you should imagine strange things.

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Doctor you think I'm crazy don't you?

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm not.

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_05]: I know what I'm saying.

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_05]: You yourself took the bullet out of my shoulder.

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Doesn't that prove to you that my husband shot me?

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_13]: On the contrary Mrs Thornton.

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_13]: At the scene of the accident they found your husband with a 32 caliber rifle in his hands.

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_13]: The bullet I removed from your shoulder was a 45 caliber pistol cartridge.

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Marie?

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Marie?

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes Mrs.

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_05]: I was just cleaning up the cellar ma'am.

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh Mrs Thornton you have the sling off.

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes Marie the doctor says the shoulder's okay now.

[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Pretty soon I'll be playing golf again.

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh that's fine ma'am I'm so glad.

[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Thanks Marie.

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Were there any calls for me while I was out?

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Mr Thornton called to tell you not to wait up for him.

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_05]: He'll be home very late and oh Mr Allen called too Mrs Thornton.

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Did he say what he wanted?

[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_05]: No ma'am said he'd try to get you later on.

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh Mrs Thornton I was thinking do you suppose Mr Thornton wants to keep this box of bullets downstairs on the open shelf?

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I was thinking it might be dangerous ma'am.

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Bullets?

[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes ma'am this box here.

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Let me see that box Marie.

[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_05]: 45 caliber cartridges.

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_05]: 45 caliber cartridges.

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Good evening.

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Have you a reservation ma'am?

[00:17:35] [SPEAKER_02]: No I've come to see the great Marlow.

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes ma'am then perhaps table on the side this way please.

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_02]: No I mean I've come to see him on a personal matter.

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_02]: He's a great man.

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Show this lady to the great Marlow's desk.

[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_05]: And when the doctor told me about the bullet he removed from my shoulder I thought it was all a terrible mistake.

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_05]: I was even too ashamed to explain to Jack why I'd acted the way I did.

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_05]: But now Mr Marlow I'm sure that what you told me over the phone that night is true.

[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Someone is really planning to kill me.

[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_05]: My husband.

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Husband? Are you sure the doctor said it was a 45 caliber cartridge?

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes a 45 caliber cartridge just like these that Marie found in the basement.

[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_13]: Does your husband have a pistol?

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_05]: I think so he keeps his guns locked in a case.

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_05]: He has the only key.

[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Mr Marlow he tried once and failed.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_05]: He'll try again.

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_05]: You must help me.

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright Mrs Thornton I'll do all I can.

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_13]: Where is your husband now?

[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_05]: He's out on business he'll be home late.

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_13]: Then we'll have to work fast.

[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_13]: Now let me see I go on again at nine o'clock.

[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_13]: I want you to go home immediately and find some way of opening the case in which your husband keeps his guns.

[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_13]: I'll call you just as soon as my act is over.

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Mrs Thornton if you can find a 45 caliber pistol in that case I think we can put an end to this affair.

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Hello?

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_07]: Mrs Marlow.

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_05]: I opened the case there was no pistol.

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Mrs Thornton listen.

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_05]: I searched all through the house and I can't find it anywhere.

[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_05]: He must have it with him.

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Mrs Thornton.

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_05]: What shall I do? I can't stay here tonight he'll kill me.

[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_09]: Mrs Thornton listen to me please.

[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_09]: You must come down here immediately.

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_09]: A few minutes ago Mr Thornton was in the nightclub.

[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_05]: My husband is there now?

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Yes thank you.

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Alright Mr Marlow.

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_13]: And where am I supposed to be right now?

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack.

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_05]: But Jack he said you were standing there all the time.

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_05]: You heard everything.

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Enough.

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_05]: It's not you.

[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Then who is it at the 78 club?

[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_13]: Me?

[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_13]: 78 club?

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_13]: Helen are you going to tell me what this is all about?

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Not you.

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh yes darling.

[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to tell you everything, everything.

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_05]: I should have told you before I wanted to only...

[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh Jack I need you so much.

[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_13]: Now look here Marlow I want to get to the bottom of this.

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_13]: But Mrs Thornton and I have told you everything.

[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_13]: Yes well then explain to me why at the very moment I was standing in my own home listening to my wife talk to you on the phone.

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_13]: You were telling Mrs Thornton that I was sitting in this nightclub planning to kill her.

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh don't you see Helen this man's a cheap trickster.

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Why he's never even seen me before.

[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_13]: Why didn't you come to me when this all started darling?

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Jack I was afraid.

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_13]: Because she thought you were the one and so did I.

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_13]: That's why I assumed it was you sitting out there.

[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_13]: Of course I never saw you before you entered my dressing room a few minutes ago.

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_13]: You see Mr Thornton I have a telepathic mind not a magic eye.

[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_13]: I know what your wife and I have told you is hard to believe.

[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_13]: I don't know what your game is Marlow.

[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_13]: But I'll find out soon enough.

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Come on Helen we're going to police headquarters.

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_13]: That won't be necessary Mr Thornton.

[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_13]: The police know about this. I told them.

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_13]: What?

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_13]: The police are here now in this nightclub.

[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_13]: Mr Thornton whether you believe it or not your wife's life is in jeopardy.

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_13]: Someone in this club now is planning to kill her.

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_13]: Perhaps this will convince you.

[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_13]: You own a 45 caliber pistol with a serial number 75682.

[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Yes that's right. That's the pistol I reported is missing.

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Yes I know. The police told me tonight.

[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_13]: Jack why didn't you tell me?

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_13]: Well Helen you've been so upset lately I didn't want to cause you any more anxiety.

[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_13]: That pistol is in all likelihood the same weapon that was used up at Lone Acres in an attempt on your wife's life.

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Mr Thornton that pistol was brought to this club tonight by the person who is planning to kill your wife.

[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_13]: The police found it concealed in an overcoat in a hat check room.

[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Whoever claims that coat is Mrs Thornton's intended murderer.

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_13]: Why should anyone want to kill her?

[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Who can it be?

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_13]: We'll soon find out.

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Mr Thornton do you recall the night you were in this club?

[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_13]: The night I first received the murder thought.

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_13]: Yes.

[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_13]: That night did you see anybody here or were you with anyone who knows both you and Mrs Thornton very well?

[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_13]: Let me see.

[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_13]: Well yes.

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_13]: No it couldn't be.

[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_13]: Pardon me please.

[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Here we go Mr Marlowe here he is.

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_13]: Will you bring him in inspector?

[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright you this way.

[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_13]: Mrs Thornton your intended murderer.

[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_13]: Paul.

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_13]: That's right.

[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_13]: He was with me here the night you received the murder thought.

[00:23:09] [SPEAKER_05]: It was Paul all the time.

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah and it almost worked yes.

[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_13]: And all the clues pointed to you Mr Thornton.

[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_05]: But why we were so friendly the three of us.

[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_13]: Friendly?

[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_13]: More than that Mrs Thornton.

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_13]: Paul Allen was hopelessly in love with you.

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Mr Marlowe you're on.

[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright I'm coming.

[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_13]: Let's go Allen.

[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll tell you every thought.

[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_10]: In shadows and stillness mystery weaves a spell of strangest facet and fear.

[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_13]: No.

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_13]: No stay where you are.

[00:25:29] [SPEAKER_13]: Do not break the stillness of this moment.

[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_13]: For this is a time of mystery.

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_13]: A time when imagination is free and moves forward swiftly.

[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_13]: This is the haunting hour.

[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Nocturne.

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Exceedingly strange is this world and of all the things in it the strangest are the ways of men.

[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_13]: There are those who harbor up bitterness along whose network of nerves taught as fiddle strings.

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_13]: Lurks the primordial passion which branded came.

[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_13]: And there are those whose thoughts alike lighted shadows against the stars.

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_13]: And the fiber of whose individuality throbs to beauty and the revelation of music.

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_13]: This is the story of two men and of their own a piece of music and a searing flame played in their destiny.

[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_13]: And Stuart Bannock.

[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_13]: Twin brothers held together by the tenuous cobweb of blood ties but poles apart in the warp of their lives.

[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_13]: Matt, brooding and neurotic.

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_13]: Stuart teeming with vigor brilliant as a shaft of morning sunlight.

[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_13]: That is Stuart playing.

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_14]: You're always playing that infernal piece.

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_14]: Why Stuart, why?

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt you've asked me that before.

[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_14]: I like it, it's my favorite.

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_14]: You'd understand if you were a musician.

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_14]: That's right, rub it in.

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_14]: You're a musician and I'm not. I can't play a note.

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_14]: So you're talented and I'm not.

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_14]: I didn't mean it that way. You're admired by everyone and I'm not.

[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_14]: And no matter what you meant.

[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_14]: The fact is I'm just a forgotten half of twin brothers. Everything conspires against me.

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt, come on. You haven't found yourself yet that's all.

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_14]: Haven't found myself.

[00:28:10] [SPEAKER_14]: I find that I've been robbed.

[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_14]: Robbed?

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_14]: Yes my dear Stuart, robbed.

[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_14]: And apparently there's nothing I can do about it.

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_14]: What are you talking about?

[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_14]: Nothing.

[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt, you never said anything to me about it.

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_14]: When did it happen?

[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_14]: When we were born.

[00:28:30] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm afraid I don't follow you.

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_14]: That's the trouble, I followed you.

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_14]: You were born first, ahead of me.

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_14]: Sure, sure by all of ten minutes but what of it?

[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_14]: I don't see that that means anything.

[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_14]: Oh naturally you wouldn't.

[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_14]: Those who ride never understand why those who walk are foot sore.

[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_14]: Those who possess don't understand the hunger of those in want.

[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt, you're talking in riddles.

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_14]: What are you trying to say?

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_14]: I say you're a robber, a thief.

[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_14]: I...

[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_14]: Yes you, my own twin brother. You stole him from me.

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt, I don't understand. What have I taken from you?

[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_14]: Talent, personality.

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_14]: Intangible things that mark the difference between one man and another.

[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_14]: Talent, personality.

[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm afraid I'm confused. I don't know what you're talking about.

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_14]: Did you ever wonder why people have no trouble telling us apart?

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_14]: No, I can't say that I have.

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_14]: Look, here we are, twins.

[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_14]: Identical twins. We look alike in every respect.

[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_14]: Did no one ever call you Matt or me Stuart?

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_14]: Do you know why?

[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_14]: Why? Because they can sense the difference between us, that's why.

[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_14]: Because the man who has and the man who has not.

[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_14]: Why do I look so amazed Stuart? It's true.

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_14]: You're the one who has and I'm the one who has not.

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_14]: And the things I lack are the qualities you have in overabundance.

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_14]: Strength, imagination, vigor and talent.

[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_14]: All the things that you've robbed from me.

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt, you're not making sense. Oh yes I am.

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_14]: I thought it all out carefully.

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_14]: I had years to do it Stuart and now I know.

[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_14]: Now you know what?

[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_14]: That a person is born with just so much luck or strength or talent.

[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_14]: With twins it has to be divided.

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_14]: There isn't quite enough of everything to go around so one twin takes more than his fair share.

[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_14]: He robs the other just as you've robbed me Stuart.

[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_14]: It's quite a theory Matt, it's a fact.

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_14]: Fact from which there can be only one escape for me.

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_06]: Mavis? Yes Matt?

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_14]: I...well that is you look very lovely today.

[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh thank you kind sir.

[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_14]: Well you're always beautiful.

[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_14]: Such flattery. It isn't flattery you know I mean it.

[00:31:10] [SPEAKER_14]: Mavis you know how I feel about you.

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_14]: Please Matt we've gone all through that before.

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_14]: I can't help it Mavis, I love you.

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_14]: I'd do anything for you.

[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_14]: I'd even kill for you.

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt! Yes I'd kill for you.

[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_14]: I can't stand the thought of some other man possessing you.

[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_14]: I tell you I won't allow it. Please please Matt you're all excited.

[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_14]: Oh why shouldn't I be?

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_14]: You expect me to stand by and do nothing while another man steals all the things that I want?

[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_06]: No one is taking anything from you Matt.

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_06]: I just don't love you, that's all.

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_14]: Tell me the truth Mavis.

[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_14]: Is there someone else?

[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_14]: Yes. I thought so.

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_14]: I thought so.

[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_14]: He always stands in the way of my happiness.

[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_06]: He? But I haven't said who it is.

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_14]: You don't have to. I know.

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Well then you must be psychic.

[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_14]: It's not a joke Mavis, it isn't funny.

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_14]: Not to me.

[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sorry.

[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_14]: Everyone is always sorry for me. Poor Matt they say.

[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_14]: He's not at all like Stuart his twin brother.

[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_14]: Poor Matt isn't it too bad he isn't a musician too?

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_14]: Poor Matt.

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Matt Matt please.

[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_14]: It's Stuart you love isn't it?

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't say.

[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_14]: You don't have to. I can see it in your eyes.

[00:32:27] [SPEAKER_14]: Why are you afraid to tell me?

[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know.

[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_06]: Maybe it's because of what I see in your eyes.

[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_06]: I'll tell you what. I'll make you a promise.

[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_06]: As soon as the news of my engagement is ready to be released,

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_06]: you'll be the first to know.

[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_14]: Thanks.

[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_14]: No.

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Now you feel like killing anyone?

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_14]: Yes more than ever.

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Mavis.

[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes Stuart.

[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_14]: Well that is you look very lovely today.

[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you kind sir.

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_14]: Then you're well you're always beautiful.

[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_14]: Mavis what's the matter you look faint.

[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh it's nothing I just remembered something that someone else said.

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_14]: You mean there are others crazy enough to think you're beautiful too?

[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_06]: So I've been led to believe.

[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_14]: I thought I was the only one.

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_06]: You are the only one.

[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh Mavis Mavis darling.

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I love you.

[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_06]: And I love you.

[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_14]: Oh this is wonderful.

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_14]: You're wonderful everything's wonderful.

[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_14]: I want to tell the whole world about us.

[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_06]: But I promise to let someone be the first to know.

[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_14]: Who is it anyone I know?

[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_06]: It's a...

[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_06]: Stuart.

[00:34:03] [SPEAKER_06]: You will be careful won't you?

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Careful?

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Careful of what dear?

[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Of a...

[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh it's nothing I guess I'm just being silly.

[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_14]: No no you're adorable.

[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And now still feel silly?

[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_06]: No no.

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh but Stuart darling.

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes dear.

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Do be careful for my sake please.

[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_14]: I said who's there?

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_14]: It's I.

[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_14]: Oh Matt.

[00:34:56] [SPEAKER_14]: You had me worried for a moment I didn't know who it was.

[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_14]: Because I'm kind of nervous tonight Mavis said something about being...

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_14]: Well Matt.

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt what's that you're carrying?

[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_14]: A bottle.

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_14]: What's in it?

[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_14]: A little liquid.

[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_14]: A what?

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_14]: Gasoline.

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt what's the big idea?

[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_14]: See this man is a big guy.

[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt you're not going to give me your answer?

[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt that's dangerous.

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_14]: For you not for me.

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_14]: What are you saying?

[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_14]: You won't rob me this time Stuart.

[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_14]: You've taken talent and personality from me.

[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_14]: Now you want the girl I love.

[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_14]: But...

[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_14]: I can't stand the thought of some other man possessing Mavis.

[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_14]: I tell you and I won't allow it.

[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt I didn't know.

[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_14]: Well you do now!

[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm going to set the house on fire and you're going to be burned alive dear brother.

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt.

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_14]: You can't get out.

[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_14]: The flames left you trapped there in the corner but I can get out.

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm standing here by the door.

[00:35:47] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt!

[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt don't strike that match.

[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_14]: Goodbye Stuart.

[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm paying you back for robbing me.

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt.

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_14]: All I have to do is throw the burning match into the liquid at your feet.

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_14]: Like this!

[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_14]: Oh my face!

[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_14]: Explode in my face like I can't see!

[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt!

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_07]: Matt!

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_07]: Stuart!

[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_07]: Matt where are you?

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Stuart!

[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_07]: Don't save me!

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_07]: I can't!

[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Save me!

[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Matt I'm cornered!

[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_15]: Nothing new in this.

[00:36:41] Matt please!

[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I see you.

[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_01]: You better not lady.

[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_15]: You're the one who lived in this house.

[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes let me see which it is.

[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_15]: Well alright there.

[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_15]: Do you recognize him?

[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_07]: I don't know.

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_13]: Matt and Stuart Banach.

[00:37:53] [SPEAKER_13]: Twin brothers.

[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Yet different as day and night.

[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Matt bitter and neurotic.

[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_13]: Stuart a brilliant pianist whose favorite music is one of Chopin's nocturnes.

[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Both are in love with Mavis who loves Stuart.

[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_13]: Matt believes he has been robbed of talent and personality by being born a twin.

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_13]: He sets fire to the Banach house to kill Stuart.

[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_13]: But he too is trapped in the flames.

[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_13]: One man leaps from the burning building.

[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_13]: Which is it?

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Matt or Stuart?

[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_16]: And the chief says there's no doubt it was a case of arson.

[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_16]: That so?

[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_16]: Yep.

[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_16]: We found a fellow who sold the gasoline.

[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_16]: He swore it was Matt Banach who bought it.

[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_16]: He's positive huh?

[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_16]: Yep.

[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_16]: Says he knew both Stuart and Matt all their lives.

[00:38:50] [SPEAKER_16]: Has never mistaken one for the other.

[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_16]: Makes the case pretty easy then doesn't it Kelly?

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_16]: How long you been on the arson squad?

[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_16]: Oh about two months.

[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_16]: Well babe when you've been on it as long as I have you'll know there's no such thing as a really easy case.

[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_16]: We've got the survivor haven't we?

[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_15]: Yep.

[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_16]: Got him under guard in the hospital.

[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_16]: Then all we have to do is identify him.

[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_16]: What's so tough about that?

[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_16]: Oh nothing, nothing at all.

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_16]: Except the guys are identical twins and this fellow is badly banged up.

[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_16]: And nobody knows whether it's Matt or Stuart.

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_16]: No way of identifying him by fingerprints or something?

[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_16]: No we've checked everywhere.

[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_16]: Their prints have never been filed.

[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_15]: Well I uh...

[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_16]: Yeah go on I'm listening.

[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_16]: Why can't we get him to talk and identify himself?

[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_16]: We've tried that.

[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_16]: He talks alright he'll tuck your arm off if you let him.

[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_16]: But getting him to make sense, that's a different story.

[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Mavis?

[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Mavis?

[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes?

[00:39:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I want Mavis.

[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_14]: I love Mavis.

[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_14]: Will you tell her that when you see her?

[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes I'll tell her.

[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_14]: Make her come to me.

[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_14]: Without her I'm lost and everything is wasted.

[00:40:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Try to rest, please.

[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_14]: You're not like Mavis.

[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Now you must be quiet so you can get to her.

[00:40:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Well?

[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Shall I tell you a secret?

[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_14]: I love her.

[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_14]: Everybody loves her but I love her most.

[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_06]: She... she loves you too.

[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_14]: How do you know?

[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_14]: Who told you?

[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_14]: Go away.

[00:40:25] [SPEAKER_14]: Tell Mavis I want her.

[00:40:27] [SPEAKER_06]: I'll bring her to you if you just go to sleep.

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_06]: And when you wake you'll be...

[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_06]: She'll be here beside you.

[00:40:33] [SPEAKER_11]: Tell her I love her.

[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_11]: I'll sleep if you promise to tell Mavis I love her.

[00:40:38] Yes.

[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, I promise.

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Now close your eyes.

[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_16]: And that's why we can't get him to identify himself.

[00:40:57] [SPEAKER_16]: He doesn't talk sense.

[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_16]: His mind's deranged.

[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_16]: I see.

[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_16]: Well you got any more brilliant ideas on how we can find out if he's Matt or if he's Stuart?

[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_16]: Well...

[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_16]: Go on, I'm still listening.

[00:41:08] [SPEAKER_16]: I got nothing else to do.

[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_16]: Have you asked the doctors at the hospital how long it'll be before he recovers his senses?

[00:41:14] [SPEAKER_16]: Of course we asked the doctors.

[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_16]: That's one of the first things we did when we found we couldn't get anything out of the man ourselves.

[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_16]: What'd they say?

[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_16]: Oh, they were very helpful.

[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_16]: Very helpful indeed.

[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_16]: They said as far as they could tell he might be like that the rest of his life.

[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_16]: Gee, that's tough.

[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_16]: And then again he might snap out of it at any time.

[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_16]: A shock or something might restore his mind to normal.

[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_15]: That gives us some hope.

[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_15]: See, Kelly...

[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_15]: Do you mind if I go along with you the next time you go to the hospital to see him?

[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_16]: No, not at all.

[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_16]: Not at all.

[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_16]: What have I got to lose?

[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_16]: There it is.

[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_16]: 8-02.

[00:41:55] [SPEAKER_16]: This is room.

[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_14]: The way she's doing it...

[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_14]: She won't let it...

[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_14]: She won't let it cheat good.

[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_14]: Listen to her.

[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_14]: She won't...

[00:42:08] [SPEAKER_14]: It's dark once the time.

[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_14]: The lights go on.

[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_14]: She makes it bright again.

[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_15]: And it gives me the creeps.

[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_14]: Tell her to make it bright again.

[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_14]: Hello.

[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_14]: Someone's here.

[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_14]: How are you feeling?

[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_16]: I don't know you.

[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_16]: Who are you?

[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_16]: Oh, just a couple of friends.

[00:42:25] [SPEAKER_16]: Who are you?

[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_14]: You wouldn't understand.

[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_14]: It's the darkness, but she makes it bright.

[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_15]: She's a metaphor devil.

[00:42:31] [SPEAKER_14]: She's Mavis and I...

[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_15]: You're Matt.

[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_15]: You're Matt, aren't you?

[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm Matt?

[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_15]: I'm Matt.

[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_15]: I'm tired.

[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_15]: But you are Matt Pannock.

[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_15]: We know that now.

[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_15]: I love Mavis.

[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_15]: Stop bluffing.

[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_15]: You're Matt Pannock.

[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_15]: You know you are.

[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_14]: I know I am?

[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_14]: I am Matt Pannock?

[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_14]: Yes.

[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_14]: Yes, I am Matt Pannock.

[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm Matt Pannock and I've been robbed.

[00:43:03] [SPEAKER_14]: Mavis...

[00:43:04] [SPEAKER_14]: Mavis makes the darkness bright.

[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_14]: Stop that.

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_15]: Now repeat after me.

[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_15]: I am Matt Pannock.

[00:43:10] [SPEAKER_15]: Go on, say it.

[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_15]: I...

[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_15]: I am...

[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_15]: This knowing experience is correct.

[00:43:16] [SPEAKER_15]: I think he's faking.

[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_15]: What's your name?

[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm Stuart Pannock.

[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm Stuart Pannock and I have everything.

[00:43:24] [SPEAKER_14]: What's your name?

[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm Matt Pannock.

[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm Matt and I've been robbed in my head.

[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_14]: What's your name?

[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_14]: I love Mavis.

[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_14]: I love Mavis because she makes everything right.

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_14]: Why give up?

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_14]: I love her.

[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_16]: Let's get out of here.

[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_14]: I love Mavis.

[00:43:46] [SPEAKER_16]: Well, Matt Pannock or Stuart Pannock, whichever he is, is leaving the hospital today.

[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_16]: Girl Mavis has taken him to her home.

[00:43:55] [SPEAKER_16]: Why?

[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_16]: Well, it seems she and Stuart became engaged the very day of the fire.

[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_16]: She doesn't know whether this fellow is Matt or Stuart, but she isn't taking any chances.

[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_16]: You know how loyal women can be.

[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_16]: Yeah.

[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_16]: I think she's going to be a good friend of mine.

[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_16]: I'd like to forget the whole case, but the chief won't stand for that.

[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_16]: He won't rest until he let us rest until he proves who the survivor is.

[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_16]: Yeah, but even if he is Matt, we can't get a conviction.

[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_16]: The man is mentally unbalanced.

[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_16]: Or else he's putting on a darn good act and an act always has a flaw that shows up in time.

[00:44:25] [SPEAKER_16]: But whatever it is, he's still getting away with murder.

[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_06]: You're home now.

[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_06]: This is your new home.

[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_12]: I am home.

[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_06]: This is where you'll get well and strong again.

[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Strong?

[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I will be strong again.

[00:44:50] [SPEAKER_06]: You see?

[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_06]: You've spoken two rational sentences in succession.

[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Home.

[00:44:55] [SPEAKER_06]: Maybe the association of ideas and objects will help.

[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Come along.

[00:44:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Come along with me.

[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_06]: That's it.

[00:45:03] [SPEAKER_12]: I'd like to be home.

[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_12]: I'd like to be home.

[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Now, sit right down here.

[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you.

[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Look what's in front of you.

[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_06]: See?

[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_06]: The piano.

[00:45:18] [SPEAKER_06]: A piano?

[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, a piano.

[00:45:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Play it.

[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Play the piano.

[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_12]: Piano.

[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Watch me.

[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_06]: See?

[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Like this.

[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_06]: Now you do that.

[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_06]: Here.

[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_06]: Let me help you.

[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_06]: Put your hands on the keys.

[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_06]: Like this.

[00:45:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Now play.

[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_06]: Please.

[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Please try.

[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Try again.

[00:45:55] Oh no!

[00:46:11] [SPEAKER_06]: Here, drink this glass of milk.

[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_14]: If you see Mavis, you tell her I love her.

[00:46:17] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, I'll tell her.

[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_06]: But first take this glass.

[00:46:21] [SPEAKER_06]: There, that's better.

[00:46:23] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, I'm so sorry for you.

[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_14]: Everyone is always sorry for me.

[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_14]: What?

[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_14]: I don't want to drink this.

[00:46:31] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm tired.

[00:46:33] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm tired of this.

[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_14]: Oh, you sound like Mavis.

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_14]: I'm tired of it all.

[00:46:37] [SPEAKER_14]: Robbed.

[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_14]: Robbed of talent and personality.

[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_14]: Oh no, no, it can't be.

[00:46:41] [SPEAKER_14]: I said robbed.

[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_14]: Don't wave your arm like that.

[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_14]: You're allowed to upset the table.

[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_14]: I can't stand the thought of some other man possessing Mavis.

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_14]: Matt's words!

[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_14]: Robbed!

[00:46:49] [SPEAKER_14]: He said that the day you...

[00:46:50] [SPEAKER_14]: I won't allow it.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_01]: So be careful of that table.

[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a burning chafing dish on it.

[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I tell you, I won't allow it!

[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, the table has now been overturned.

[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_07]: I won't allow it.

[00:46:59] [SPEAKER_01]: The rug...

[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_07]: The rug is on fire.

[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_07]: It's on fire.

[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_07]: Get out of the way.

[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Get out of the way while I put out this fire.

[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_06]: Stand over there.

[00:47:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Stand over there by the piano.

[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, there.

[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_07]: There the fire is out.

[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Do you hear?

[00:47:20] [SPEAKER_06]: The fire is out.

[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_11]: Fire?

[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_11]: Fire?

[00:47:27] [SPEAKER_07]: Don't come near me.

[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_07]: Stay there by the piano.

[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_07]: Piano?

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_07]: Yes, yes, by the piano.

[00:47:36] Piano.

[00:47:37] [SPEAKER_07]: Piano.

[00:47:46] Piano!

[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_07]: It's you!

[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_13]: Exceedingly strange is this world.

[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_13]: And of all the things in it,

[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_13]: the strangest are the ways of men.

[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_13]: This is the story of two men

[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_13]: and of the role a piece of music

[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_13]: and a searing flame played in their destiny.

[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_13]: Two men, Matt and Stuart Banach,

[00:48:29] [SPEAKER_13]: twin brothers,

[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_13]: held together by the tenuous cupboard of blood ties,

[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_13]: but poles apart in the warp of their lives.

[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_13]: Matt, brooding and erotic.

[00:48:43] [SPEAKER_13]: Stuart, teeming with vigor,

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_13]: brilliant as a shaft of morning sunlight.

[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_13]: From shadows and stillness,

[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_13]: mystery weaves a spell of strangest fascination,

[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_13]: charging the mind with doubts and fears.

[00:49:25] [SPEAKER_13]: For mystery is a strange companion,

[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_13]: a living memory in

[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_13]: the haunting hour.

[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_00]: This has been a Cryptic County podcast.
